This benzodiazepine was developed by a military lab during the Vietnam era.
It was given to U.S. bomber pilots (B52) the week before they had a "job"; and the days after.
It literally made them wake up WITHOUT ANY EMPATHY whatsoever.
And the ability to just "forget" and be able to sleep right after bombing.
Some excerpts for clarification :
"Temazepam had the highest rate of drug intoxication, including overdose, among common benzodiazepines in cases with and without combination with alcohol in a 1985 study."
"Some studies have observed tolerance to temazepam after as little as one week's use."
"Chronic or excessive use of temazepam may cause drug tolerance, which can develop rapidly. This drug is therefore not recommended for long-term use. Most hypnotics lose their sleep-inducing properties after about 3 to 14 days. In use longer than 1–2 weeks, tolerance will frequently develop towards the ability of temazepam to maintain sleep, so that the drug loses effectiveness. A study in 11 young male subjects showed that significant tolerance occurs to temazepam's thermoregulatory effects and sleep inducing properties after 1 week of use of 30 mg temazepam."

With other substances, it can take months or even years before becoming tolerant (dependent). With temazepam, just like heroin, you only need a few doses to get hooked. These are the withdrawal symptoms, after just a short period of use :
