Original Message So I am trying to get my city to allow for backyard chickens. The way the ordinance is written i can have chickens if they are no closer than 500ft to a neighbors home. My property is only 275 in length. I am trying to get them to change the ordinance to allow them closer. When i went to the council meeting they table the issue an basically said that I am new to the community and i should worry more about establishing a good rapport with people in town than chickens. However, their ordinance read "no person shall own, possess, harbor, or maintain any fowl within 500ft of another persons dwelling".

They do not define fowl, so by default it would include all birds. As a result of their lack of definition of the word, no person should be allowed to have a bird feeder, birdbath or any "pet" type bird in their home or yard, as this could be construed to be maintaining the birds.

They do not, however, have any ordinances in regards to livestock. So essentially, I can go out and get some pigs, goats, a horse or a cow and put then in my backyard.

How should I approach them during my next meeting?
Should I just go ahead and get some pigs just to teach them a lesson?
