Actually got these beans at Costco--Kirkland Brand-- $11.00 for a 2 lb. bag. Colombia has been struggling with a fungus called leaf rust on its production for a number of years. There are other countries that have declared agricultural states of national emergency because of this same fungus. Those countries would be Honduras, Guatemala and Costa Rica. El Salvador and Nicaragua are also badly affected. There is a video in the following link that talks about it: Coffee Leaf 'Rust' Threatens Coffee Crop http://on.aol.com/video/coffee-leaf-rust-threatens-coffee-crop-517668472
God this is the stuff of nightmares ,when will this end ,i certainly wont sleep tonight .
Oops, I forgot to log in. I remember doing a thread last year about tiny spider mites that became a threat to the Colombian crop. Never heard too much more about it after that. This fungus impacts trees and their ability to produce over several years. I've read that if they don't get it under control and aggressively manage it, many coffee farms will be destroyed.
I start every day with a fresh cup of coffee...
lets start the new day off at GLP with Coffee Doom
Coffee is already high enough... im sure this will not bode well on the already expensive brew... as far as price and quantity availability...
Strike a deal with the farmers so they can get back to work!
(see my next reply below... it proves im not entirely heartless... concerning the plight of these people)
