Original Message The song's origins were in a pre-United States Revolutionary War song originally sung by British military officers to mock the dishevelled, unorganized colonial "Yankees" with whom they served in the French and Indian War. At the time, the most common meaning of the word doodle had the meaning of "simpleton" or "fool".

Most interestingly though, is the part when this yankee sticks a feather in his hat and calls it "Macaroni".

If you ever wondered why he called it "macaroni", it's because during this era a flaming homosexual social club in England, which went by the name "macaroni", and the homosexuals during this era were known as "macaroni".

"In mid-18th century England, a macaroni was a fashionable fellow who dressed and even spoke in an outlandishly affected manner".

In other words, the brits were not only calling us simpletons, they were calling us homos.

This song caught on in the states, and till this day it is a merry "American" sing-along for the kiddies.
