"Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask and he will tell you the truth." - Oscar Wilde
Now, why is that? Simple. We all have a lot of differing views, beliefs, paradigms, and standards... but when we say something in a persona that someone can link directly to ourselves, then that defines us as such in their eyes. If, in the future, we say something that is seemingly conflicting or contradictory to the casual observer, we are called out on it and falsely ridiculed for it.
And if we were to do nothing but speak our true minds and hearts as ourselves, with no mask covering our identity, then we would be ridiculed and shunned all the more.
But the moment we become just another face in the crowd, another voice in the choir...the moment we become a faceless speaker, unattached to a persona that people can point at...that is the moment when we are free to say whatever our hearts and minds yearn to say.
And that is the power of the Anonymous Coward. We can say what those who choose to let themselves be defined dare not.
So, for the truth in our hearts, For the opinions we secretly hold, For all the things that would otherwise go unsaid....
AC's, we ride!
