Unless, the west coast and/or Hawaii is not under it's watch, or the website hasn't been updated; it looks like this id a hoax
According to the wiki article each branch of the military can have its defcon level raised independent of one another. Makes sense. If this were about NK, the Army's defcon level most likely wouldn't change, it would be the USAF since they (and the Navy) are the nation's first responders. But I hear the Navy has no carrier groups near NK at the moment? And also, the Navy doesn't have stealth aircraft capable of long range bombing deep within NK territory. Remember in '91 when the B2 stealths flew from the Midwest USA to Iraq and dropped the first bombs?
Are you kidding? All DEFCON levels would be to the moon.
No, I'm not kidding. And you can read it for yourself. "The DEFCON level is controlled primarily by the U.S. President and the U.S. Secretary of Defense through the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Combatant Commanders, and each DEFCON level defines specific security, activation and response scenarios for the troops in question. Different branches of the U.S. Armed Forces (like the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, Air Force) and different bases or command groups can be activated at different defense conditions..."
My point being, no matter if the DEFCON levels are independent, if this were about the DPRK, all branches of the service should be at elevated DEFCON. Right?
I see where you're going with this, but I think I respectfully disagree. Something tells me that the levels have to do with a direct threat to the USA as a whole. Hence the elevated levels during the Cuban missile crisis and 9/11. The defcon system was developed back in the days of the cold war and SAC (strategic air command) when the entire country was at risk of nuclear attack by the soviets. I think the system remains, but the rules have changed/adapted since '59 with the end of the Cold War and the risk/threat of attack on the nation as a whole has been drastically reduced. That's why I think nowadays the POTUS and the joint chiefs have the option to raise the defcon level of individual branches depending on the relevancy of the threat.
