Nothing gonna happen
Hostages make great bargaining chips
Do you think they care? They'll be running it over as they scream by in the first wave on their way to Seoul!
Nobody really talks about a ground force offensive with NK, but I agree with you. With the amount of infantry they have it would be a human wave going against SK. And while all of this is going on, let's not forget Iran. Or our actions (or possible ones) against Iran. Iran has been far too quiet lately, and quiet with "enemies" often means they're up to something.
Good point. If you look at the military stats, North Korea outnumbers South Korea in every branch of the military. If North Korea was pushed back and started to lose the war they could activate their 8.2 million reserves and 5,000 tanks and finish the job on the ground. In 1950 the Chinese 'human wave' attack only consisted of about 80,000 troops (still a lot by any measure), but if you could imagine a human wave attack of over 1 million (let alone 8.2 million) you get to see the dilemma for the South Koreans and U.S. It puts the U.S in a position where it risks Chinese or Russian intervention by sending multiple aircraft carriers and hundreds of thousands of troops and heavy armory into China and Russia's backyard. This also means that the U.S would have to pull its carriers and heavy armor from strategically important areas protecting other allies (i.e, Israel, Persian Gulf, etc...) If the U.S decides to revoke its 'first use' policy of nuclear weapons and deal with the NK threat by nuking its way to victory, that invites a series of variables that involve some pretty ugly miscalculations (not to mention full Japanese rearmament and acquisition of an ICBM capability that would have far-reaching global implications). So, in summary........ If North Korea uses its FULL military might it would probably overwhelm the relatively small SK-US force and win, unless the U.S is happy to send a quarter of its military on to China's and Russia's doorstep and possibly start WW3.
I work for a Missile Defense Contractor at our home of Missile Defense and we have numerous analysts and they all agree that the 8.2 Million reserves is highly over-exaggerated. NK does not and could not FUEL, FEED, and resource these troops. It would take their entire country's CONSTANT production just to supply the active troops. It is also common accepted knowledge in the intel group that many of NKs troops would abandon there posts immediately in a large crisis. Even in peace time they dont have the resources to feed and fuel the population. Just imagine when something real big pops off due to NK jumping the gun; the few resources they have will be cut off instantaneous.
Yes that number is certainly an exaggeration, it would mean NK has a bigger army than China by far. And even if they can remotely field something like that, what shape would they be in?
You are over-thinking things way, way too much. This isn't the 1940s-1960s. This would not be a conflict. Do you even realize the US Congress has not declared a "War" since WW2? Everything else has been considered a conflict...Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan etc. The semantics of Congress declaring war has repercussions you don't even realize. Giving the US free reign to neutralize targets by any and all means. Where every conflict since WW2 they had to worry about civilian casualties and an enemy using guerilla tactics. That would be over in a heartbeat. Not sure why you think the US would put any boots on the ground, when in reality that is the last thing they would do after Air and Sea. There are many means with conventional weapons to stop a million man army from crossing the border. It is actually extremely easy to inflict devastating mass casualties since they are so grouped together. Why you guys think all the US military tech that you see is the only things we have are beyond me. The reality is the tech is 40-50 years beyond what many comprehend.
I agree with the general thrust of your argument, I don't think most people recognize how proficient at killing the US military has become. A study of the the unprecedented and anomalous kill ratios in engaged conflict in Gulf War I and 2 should clue everyone in. Some super sci-fi technology the US posesses could be a possible explanation (better than everything else I heard), or simply a more prosaic combination of advanced technology and training, is up in the air.
Your Intel obviously came from the DOD...its bull shit! Why do you think our servicemen have the highest suicides rate in history? You are either a shill or a dumb fucking bastard.
Stop repeating your mindless liberal meme.
China has placed military forces on heightened alert in the northeastern part of the country as tensions mount on the Korean peninsula following recent threats by Pyongyang to attack, U.S. officials said.
