The verse says rev17:5 MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.
What it is saying is that the power of Babylon comes from another source, which I assume is Satan. Think of witchcraft and such referred to as mystery schools.
Babylon was the singular world power in its time. In the past we know that Greece, Rome, Italy, Spain, Portugal,Germany, England, Japan, the USA, Russia etc have all been powers that have used economic expansion and greed as a motivating factor to do business in other countries.
Could it be that Babylon is the economic system and that is why it will collapse. No doubt it has caused the world wars, and all the regional wars too. So rather than being the USA or any one country, it is the whole system going down. This would jive with prophecy.
I am stumped on the part about the great city, but it could be it is referring to the centers of finance in each of these countries???
Just throwing this out there for you to gestate on.
