Many years ago when I had 11-years, I lived in Chicago. The neighbourhood kids would play football or 500 (a type of baseball game) on the side streets. We would play till being called home for dinner, and then again til dark. Every kid within a mile knew ever other kid.
Walter was older, maybe 15. He was weird. He would catch, with bait and intricate home-made traps, rats and field mice. He would use duct tape to attach the living creatures to his garage. Then he would shoot at them with his pellet gun. I saw him do it a couple of times, a terrible spectacle.
One day we were playing 500 a block over from Walters, some kids came running by saying Walter was doing something crazy. We all ran over to see him mowing his front lawn in a circular pattern from the outside in. Like a spiral. I pushed to the front of the crowd and saw a cat buried with only it's head above ground in the middle of the lawn.
I left, but I heard later what happened to that poor cat.
Some kids burn ants, squash worms, kick dogs. Why?
