I think it's fucking bullshit that an iPod touch cannot download free apps without having a credit card on file and associated to the iTunes account the device is tied to.

It's fucking bullshit there's so much proprietary data mangling in Apple DBs that open source coders have lost all interest in cracking the DB system to allow users to manage their music libraries with software that works the way simple software should like Win-fucking-amp.

While some of this is correct not all of it is correct. Most of the itunes processed are needed for itunes to work correctly. Bonjour is apples zero wireless configuration program. It works with apple devices and other supported devices to send wireless services to different devices. It allows one to sync wirelessly from their PC or MAC with their device. Printers use this service as well to send out wireless print data to MAC PC's. It supposedly works better than wifi.

The mobile device support are the actual drivers and software that allows you to connect your device to your computer. Without it the device is NEVER detected by the computer and you cannot use it on a computer.

The auto update service is bullshit, i would certainly agree with that. I hate auto update programs in general

Any apple device can download free apps and songs without entering a credit card, however it has to be done a special way. It's kinda bullshit, i will agree, but it still can be done. The easiest way to explain it is all you have to do is download a free app BEFORE creating an apple ID. Once you try to download it, it will prompt you to either create an apple ID or enter an existing apple ID. At this point you would then choose to create an apple ID. Enter all your personal info and at the payment information screen, just beside all of the credit card options, there will a button that says NONE. Just choose that at viola. You got yourself a free apple ID. I have one myself and had to go through this same method to get one. If you have already created an apple ID then as long as there is no pending transactions or remaining balance then you can change the payment info to remove the credit card by simply going to the payment information section of your apple ID info and change it to the big NONE button. That eliminates the credit card from your apple ID.

As i said its bullshit that you have to go through all of that to begin with but it can be done.

It is absolutely NOT necessary for any of those things to be run as system services and not be able to be configured otherwise.

There is no reason to not load on-the-fly all of the capabilities iTunes needs for device management, except for nefarious integration into peoples' systems at levels they are not aware of.

iTunes knows more about most peoples' computers than they do themselves.
