Original Message The younger brother who is accused of bombing the Boston marathon will be in court in two weeks for a probable cause hearing. Jahar Tsnaraev, if convicted,is eligible for the death penalty.
He is 19 years old. His parents are in Russia and of course his brother (believed to be the mastermind of this crime) is dead. He was found un-armed, bleeding, and badly injured. His injuries suffered right before his capture reportedly include multiple bullets to left leg shattering one bone, bullets to right leg, multiple bullets to left hand rendering it disabled, severe cut from top of neck to collar bone, deaf in left ear, and, probably most serious, injuries to neck and face where a bullet went through the right side of his neck and exited the opposite side making a hole the size of a quarter. He may never fully recover from all of it. He has not been allowed visitors except for his lawyers.
His friends and professors are in disbelief. They did not know him to be particularly religious. They report that he was fun, caring, intelligent, and liked to smoke marijuana "a bit". This heinous act seemed totally out of character for him. This is not to say he is not guilty of his part, he may well be. We shall see. But, he may also may not have been the master mind in this. Some believe he may have been trying to gain approval from his brother -- the only authoritative family figure left in the US since his parents left.
So my question for society is this: should any of this be taken into account for a lighter sentence such as life? Could we possibly forgive a little and give him a chance to make amends to the victims and society?
Or are we all still ready to kill him and gain our revenge?
