Very good question.

Sun's magnetic field a shield/focuser of EM radiation.

ISON an emitter?

Solar shield flipping, might be extremely low powered or even zero for flip.

ISON emits... whatever... when solar shield/focuser is down/rearranging/unfocused...

ISON emits into Sun, perhaps emitted energy/material is not therefore refocused away from sun, but rather absorbed into sun.

So, perhaps, if ISON was/is emitting bad stuff, the sun sucks it in instead of repelling it, and so it doesn't get thrown outwards, and so Earth doesn't get hit by it...

The sun's magnetic field weakens during a pole shift. Nothing out of the ordinary unless it happens to have a comet emitting god knows what into it at the same time!
