JERUSALEM (CNN) -- -- An Israeli airstrike in Gaza City on Saturday killed Islamic Jihad's most senior militant in the Gaza coastal area, Israeli and Palestinians sources said.
The Israel Defense Forces confirmed it conducted an airstrike targeting Mohammed Al Dahdouh.
Palestinian sources also identified Al Dahdouh as a fatality and said three others were killed in the strike, a woman, her 4-year-old son, and the boy's grandmother.
Earlier Palestinian sources incorrectly said the victim was a Hamas commander.
Just hours earlier, an explosion seriously wounded Palestinian intelligence chief Tareq Abu Rajab at his headquarters, killing his bodyguard and sparking accusations that it was an assassination attempt by a rival Palestinian faction.
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas -- an ally of Rajab's -- called the blast "unfortunate" and said it poses a "grave danger" to the Palestinian Authority, according to The Associated Press.
Rajab and his bodyguards were in an elevator in his Gaza City headquarters building when the blast went off, Palestinian security sources said. (Watch as some question if this was an assassination attempt -- 1:19)
Nine people were wounded and taken to a Palestinian hospital in Gaza to be treated.
Rajab was later moved to an Israeli hospital by ambulance, Palestinian security sources said. There was no immediate word on his condition.
The blast came amid daily violence between members of Hamas, which now controls the Palestinian Authority, and Fatah, which formerly controlled it. Rajab is a Fatah loyalist.
Rajab survived an attempt on his life two years ago, Palestinian security sources said.
