Original Message I keep reading about countless people who do not qualify for federal subsidies saying they simply can't afford the premiums for Obamacare, even the cheapest plans, so they are opting to pay the tax instead. Yet what I am not seeing is the relevant follow up question "why not"? It is taken at face value that it is unaffordable. I would ask well, do you have a cell phone? Do you have cable tv? Shouldn't you cut back on those expenses first rather than opting out of health care?

Of course, but that won't happen. There are any number of serious flaws with this law, including that its supporters actually believed that humans would act "responsibly" and "do the right thing". And it relied on completely unrealistic figures of young healthy 20 somethings signing up to even out the risks to insurers. But, with a law that says even with a preexisting condition you can't be denied coverage - why bother? Why not just wait until you are sick and then enroll? It would most likely be cheaper than paying a several hundred dollar a month premium when you don't really go to the doctor, or maybe only once a year. There is ZERO incentive for someone to enroll unless they are sick and need medical care. Even the tax isn't much of an incentive because it would still be less than the cost of coverage. If the government had any balls they would make the tax something meaningful, like 10% or more, so that it was a better deal to sign up and get coverage.

It's only downhill from here.
