Original Message Earth used to be in the orbital position where the asteroid belt currently is, between Mars and Jupiter. Something collided with Earth, tens of millions of years ago, knocking it into its current orbital position. At the time, Earth was much smaller and had a solid crust, no plates. In fact, Earth is the only planet known with plate tectonics. When this object collided with Earth, it shattered and cracked Earths crust like an egg shell, caused the pacific rift, jettisoned much debris into space (the asteroid belt), some of which re-collected into the moon. Some of this debris was dragged into the elliptical orbit of the object that collided with Earth, we now call these objects comets. Earth then settled into its current orbital position, and has been growing ever since as the super pressurized molten mantle and core has been leaking out, creating new "crust."

They always illustrate "Pangea" as a super continent, surrouned on all sides by water, like this:

But in fact, Pangea was joined on ALL sides, with less water on the planet, like this:

Whatever collided with Earth caused this. It all implies another "object" in our solar system. I am inclined to believe that it is another star, potentially with its own set of planets or just large planet sized chunks of debris that it drags with it.
