Original Message Research from the University of Chicago indicates that at least 50 percent of Americans believe in at least one conspiracy theory.

"It turns out the consistent predictor of such beliefs is something you might almost call an All American attitude. Belief in individualism, distrust of authority, and together those things translate to a desire to avoid being controlled by large secret forces."
