I recently asked a question about a nations power, I asked if American technology and training can make my idea for a country called the "United Republic of the Great Pinelands" made of the Queen Elizabeth Islands a more powerful country than A European one.
And I got a bunch of shit from somebody.
This is what was said to me...
The Queen Elizabeth Islands? Those are part of the sovereign kingdom of Canada.
Canadians have so little interest in republics, there's not even a political party in Canada's multiparty political system agitating for Canada to become one. And that's despite the last 238 years of Canada's 480 year history being spent living next door to the world's largest republic.
More to the point, the Queen Elizabeth Islands are part of the Territory of Nunavut. Unlike Canada's Provinces, Canada's 10 Provinces, Canada's 3 far north Territories (including Nunavut) derive their mandates and powers directly from the Federal Canadian Government in Right of the Canadian Crown. There's no way the Federal Canadian Government would just let any portion of Canada or Nunavut (Canada's largest geopolitical region) ever become a republic.
Especially when Canada's Arctic Sovereignty (and safeguarding it via the militarization of the Canadian Arctic) is a core element of the Canadian Government's foreign policy and an essential component of Canada's national identity (As Canada's national anthem says, "The True North, Strong and Free".)
Nor would Nunavut's inhabitants tolerate such a thing. Nunavut was specifically created as a homeland for Canada's indigenous Inuit People. The Queen Elizabeth Islands are part of the Qikiqtaaluk Region of that homeland. Unless you know the Inuktitut or Inuinnaqtun for, "Stop shooting, I surrender!!!", your plan to take any portion of their land away from them will be extremely short lived. As will you.
There's more up there than just the local inhabitants up there to worry about. There's also the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Canadian Rangers and Canadian Armed Forces. Canada's Government is crystal clear on its position on Canadian Arctic Sovereignty.
As for the "is it really true?" portion of your question: No, like all the rest, that's all in your head. Nunavut is inaccessible to ships for most of the year because the Arctic Ocean freezes in winter, blocking sea routes through Canada's famed & fabled Northwest Passage. In winter, it's also damned near impossible to get in and out by aircraft due to the extreme cold and frequent storms (especially the Ground Blizzards common to both the North and South Poles.) It's precisely because of Canada's legendarily fierce winters that Canada's nicknamed, The Great White North. How are you supposed to do any trade when no planes or ships will be able to conduct any trade?
Nunavut is also the only geopolitical region in Canada not connected to the rest of Canada by roadways. So there's no way you'd be trucking goods in or out of the Queen Elizabeth Islands either.
Even if your bizarrely delusional and unrealistic fantasy republic idea were possible (which it's honestly not) it sure as hell wouldn't be more powerful than any average EU nations. Life at the top of the planet is harder than anything you can imagine.
That's why the Inuit, despite having in Nunavut a homeland larger in geographical size than Western Europe, don't suffer from overpopulation.
So here's the facts about our navy (and this is not the entire navy, just a list of the capital surface fleet ships and transport ships)
Here are some would be facts about "The Marine République Nationale"
8 Nuclear powered Aircraft Carriers.

All of these are made by a company that works with US ship designers, and has a relationship with General Dynamics.
And our Aircraft is made in the Republic under license by Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Sikorsky, and Bell Helicopter and Northrop Grumman..
Our Training comes from the USA and Israel.
And here's another fact for ya.
1. It is no longer part of Nunavut if it were purchased for that purpose, to become a sovereign nation.
2. Canada would get it's f*ckin' ass CREAMED in a f*cking New York minute, NO problems whatsoever.
3. US technology Is simply the best there is.
4. Urbanization makes things a whole lot easier.
Im f*cking tired of stupid assholes like that guy.
Because... You know, I don't understand who the fuck people think the French are, but they are not predisposed to being 5th rank... NOBODY is...
And America has proved that over and over, and over and over again.
FRANCE is that way, for a whole lot of reasons, lack influence, lack ideology, lack of trade, A lackluster culture for Engineering, a Lackluster gunmanship culture, lack of warrior spirit.. etc.
It doesn't speak for another damn country, letalone an ally of the USA who willingly and objectively trades ideas with the world power which is the USA, and other allies, with a great scientific and engineering Education and Employment.
