Original Message In the 1943-44 the advancing American troops captured countless German prisoners and, to the surprise of many Americans, many German officers expressed a wish that the western Allies would team up with the nearly-beaten German military and turn against the Russians. Even though they were beaten, low on equipment and men, they wished to continue fighting - not against the western states but against Russia and Communism.

Imagine if that had happened. Suddenly all the German forces on the western front would have been directed back to the east together with Americans, British and Commonwealth forces. It would have been a tremendous fight, but there wouldn't have been Cold War and the Russian threat we're still feeling today wouldn't have realized.

What a lost opportunity it was.
