Abeer Qassim Hamza was fourteen years old. She lived with her family in an isolated farm house in the town of Al-Mahmudiyah, south of Baghdad, Iraq. Their house was situated approximately 200 meters away from a traffic checkpoint manned by US soldiers.
On March 12, 2006 SGT Paul E. Cortez, SPC James P. Barker, PFC Jesse V. Spielman and PFC Bryan L. Howard, lead by Steven Green, who was honorably discharged from the Army on May 16, 2006, went to the Qassim house leaving SGT Anthony W. Yribe to man the check point.
In the days prior to the event, Steven Green had discussed raping Abeer. The soldiers, who had noticed Abeer as she worked in the field next to her house had previously gone to her house numerous times, ostensibly to search it, and had made advances towards Abeer including one soldier stroking Abeer's terrified face.
The soldiers entered the house and ordered Abeer's father Qasim Hamza Raheem, 45; her mother Fakhriyah Taha Muhsin, 34; her sister Hadeel Qasim Hamza, aged 7 into another room where Steven Green killed them. Both of Abeer's mother's arms were broken, and her father's head smashed into pieces.
Then the soldiers held her down and gang raped the fourteen year-old Abeer. When they were done they smashed her head in, then doused her naked body in fuel and set her alight.
