Original Message The Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS)out of respect for Steve & his family, is pulling all of Steve Irwins ads off their site, and televison.

Advertising withdrawn

The Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) is withdrawing all advertising featuring Irwin out of respect for his family.

Irwin starred in several television advertisements promoting the importance of quarantine measures in Australia.

AQIS spokesman Carson Creagh says they will review the campaign after speaking with the Irwin family.

"Out of respect to Steve and his family, we are withdrawing material that features him from the quarantine matters advertising and awareness campaign," he said.

"We're also going to be removing the inflight video that's shown on flights coming into Australia."

Mr Creagh cannot say if the campaign will be reused.

"At the moment, we don't have any firm plans to continue using his material, but he was such a tremendous spokesman for and advocate of quarantine and other issues that we really feel it's important to honour his memory," he said.

Crikey! — Quarantine Matters!
AQIS’s continuing national awareness campaign, Quarantine Matters! recruited Steve ‘Crocodile Hunter’ Irwin to feature in television and other advertising during the year to help spread the quarantine message.

The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Warren Truss, launched the new advertising campaign last December.

Steve Irwin was an enthusiastic recruit to the campaign, spreading the quarantine message well beyond the television commercial.

“Food, plant cuttings seeds, nuts or anything made from wood, plant or animal material from overseas could devastate Australia by introducing some of the world’s nastiest pests,” he said.

Now in its fourth year, the Quarantine Matters! campaign continues to educate and inform Australian travellers, overseas visitors and senders and receivers of international mail about quarantine. The campaign also seeks to develop a commitment that leads to increased compliance with quarantine regulations and a reduced risk to Australia.

The campaign incorporates other targeted activities, including stakeholder relations, to extend its reach and profile. Key stakeholders include Australia Post, Customs, the Australian Tourism Commission, cargo brokers, freight forwarders, importers and exporters.
