It will kill the mites
DO NOT DO THIS! IT IS TOXIC TO DOGS! You can purchase Ivermectin 1% solution (about $40) at a feed store or online and give by mouth daily with a syringe until cleared up (may take months). Here are exact dosing instructions for demodex mange: http://dogaware.com/health/ivomec.html#demodex I'm assuming the dog has regular demodex mange, not sarcoptic mange. If it has sarcoptic mange, coming into contact with the dog, it will spread to humans and you will be itchy and have to clean everything in the home extremely thoroughly! There are different dosages for sarcoptic mange here: http://dogaware.com/health/ivomec.html#sarcoptic If your dog is a collie breed or mix, ivermectin may me toxic! Other breeds as well. Read this first to make sure: http://dogaware.com/health/ivomec.html#sensitivity If you decide to go this DIY route, eventually you should have a vet do a skin scrape to make sure it's all gone. If you cannot do this bare minimum for your dog, then please find a rescue for it.
You rub the affected areas with the ivermectin paste, you dont have to feed it to the dog, it works quicker that way, put a bit on every day. If you want t it to work better and faster wet the affected areas with a spinosad d containing solutionl, its whats in comfortis but buy the plant spray version because its cheap. Ive done it and the expense is very low if you buy the ivermectin horse paste on line and buy the spinosad d containing insecticide spray at one of the big box stores. I think i had maybe 20 bucks total in it and it took a couple weeks total from weaping crustiy mess to cured and healing. wash off all the crusty matted junk off of the affected areas too with soap and iodine solution.
