Most Brits aren't bilingual. Most Australians aren't bilingual. Most New Zealanders aren't bilingual. A lot of white South Africans probably speak that Afrikaans gibberish, but only completely out of necessity. Most Jamaicans speak their incoherent version of English only. Most native English speakers in Canada only speak English. If they learn any French, it's just incidental, the same way Americans in the southwest naturally pick up some Spanish phrases here and there.
But the pattern is clear. For the last two or two and a half centuries English has been a sort of neutral international language of commerce and politics. Don't blame us Americans; blame the empire for whom the sun never set.
But yeah, why look at things in a reasonable way when there's the opportunity at hand to single out Americans and bash us for a complete non-issue?
