IT’S the new medical menace brewing across Britain.
Feeling angry, irritable and aggressive. Plagued by thumping headaches? You could be experiencing . . . coffee rage.
It’s no storm in a tea cup either. Thousands of people are victims, say doctors, with Hugh Grant and Robbie Williams among the most well-known sufferers.
It seems a cup of what you fancy is fast becoming a recipe for disaster thanks to its main active ingredient caffeine — a strong stimulant.
And it’s no surprise the problem is on the rise, with coffee shops now Britain’s fastest-growing retail business.
There are already more than 3,000 on the High Street, clocking up sales of £1.3billion a year — and experts say those numbers will DOUBLE by 2017.
As a nation, we polish off 70million cups of coffee a day, and health specialists YorkTest reckon as many as one in 20 of us has an intolerance to it.
Tell-tale signs include itchy skin, joint pains, depression, tiredness and migraines and usually occur within an hour of drinking a cup — and it is these symptoms which can lead to coffee rage.
The problem takes many forms. Hollywood star Hugh admits: “I get coffee rage. It comes after drinking Nescafe. It’s the world’s most delicious coffee but I get foul — really foul — an hour later.” Chart-topper Robbie went into rehab in February as his habit reached 36 espressos a day.
He was also drinking caffeine-rich Red Bull as well.
No wonder friends say he was getting crotchety.
