Subject 6 Year Old Hard Money Realist

Message When I was a very little boy, my grandparents used to give me silver dollars for my birthday. I LOVED those silver dollars. I would put them in the back of my metal Tonka truck and drive them around. I was mesmerized by their beauty and loved how solid they felt.

By the time I was about 6 or so, I had accumulated three or four of these wonderful coins and my Mom decided it was time I learn about saving money.

She told me that we would put my silver dollars in the bank. I was terrified! I certainly didn't want to loose my silver dollars, or ("salver" dollars as I used to say), but she reassured me that I could get them any time I wanted!

I reluctantly agreed. We went to the bank and I opened my very first savings account and in went my precious coins.
Even though I knew that I was doing the "right" thing, something felt very wrong about letting go of those coins.

Several months later I couldn't stand it any more and I told my mom that I wanted my dollars back. She agreed and off we went to the bank. Imagine my surprise (and sorrow) when the teller handed me three pieces of green paper.

"But these aren't my salver dollars!", I cried to my mom as we walked to the car. She tried in vain to explain to me that "yes those are dollars" I would not be consoled. I knew in my heart that they were not the same, NOT EVEN CLOSE.

It became a bit of a joke in my family. My Mom felt bad enough about it that she bought me a beautiful silver dollar for my 18th birthday.

We all had a good laugh about it, she probably spent $20 for that silver dollar. It was just like the ones that I put in the bank and got green paper for when I asked for them back.

What I instinctively knew as a 6 year old (that paper is not real money) I have carried forward to this day. I thank God that I have acted on this and bought real gold and silver. As that green paper deteriorates in value, my gold and silver has retained, and has even GAINED in value.

Got salver?, got gold??
