And then there was the 1935 Sanger Space Shuttle designed in Austria.  The very first practicle design for a Space Shuttle, alot of which went into the SR 71.  H.G. Wells, btw was the first one to come up with the term Atomic Bomb.  So much pre-WWII history was buried deep underground at the start of WWII in 1939, some it has not yet even resurfaced if it ever will.
