What is biodynamics?
Biodynamics is a philosophy of farming that was developed by Rudolf Steiner in 1924 to counter earlier trends toward the use of chemical fertilizers and expanded commercial agriculture. Biodynamics became an effort to promote a more balanced approach.

There are a few basic philosophies that you have to follow in biodynamics. First, think about the farm as a living organism. This is an essential point to understanding biodynamics. It's not just a farm, but a living organism. It's a series of systems that function together as a whole.

In a larger sense, biodynamic gardeners seek to heal and balance the earth, so organic principles play an important role. You can't have a healthy biodynamic farm without sound organic principles. So a biodynamic gardener needs to practice good composting and cover cropping.

Biodynamics can get a little "out of this world." Whereas organic farming focuses primarily on material substances, Steiner acknowledged a wider breadth of influences beyond the Earth. With biodynamics, we look at astral and ethereal energies – things from the cosmos and things of this earth.
