Obama to Host Super Bowl Party as Stimulus Talks Continue
The president on Sunday is participating in a different type of partisanship -- which team to support in the Super Bowl

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama moves the business of state to the White House television room Sunday when 15 lawmakers troop into the executive mansion to watch the American football championship -- snacks and political arm-twisting included.

The president, determined not to give up on changing political behavior in Washington, persisted in his attempts to build support in both political parties for his $825 billion-plus economic spending and tax cut plan.

The measure was passed by the House of Representatives last week, but not a single Republican supported the bill.

The Senate takes up the measure this week and Obama, publicly unfazed by the Republican cold shoulder in the House, predicted greater Republican support in the upper chamber for the unprecedented stimulus plan designed to pull the American economy out of its steepest slide in 80 years.

The Super Bowl pits the Arizona Cardinals against the Pittsburgh Steelers. A third of the 15 lawmakers invited to join Obama are from Pennsylvania, the Steelers home state and one of the perennial battlegrounds in presidential elections. Two of those attending are from Arizona, home to Sen. John McCain, Obama's foe in last year's election.

Since his Jan. 20 inauguration, Obama has met at the White House with congressional leaders, traveled to Capitol Hill for private sessions with House and Senate Republicans and invited a bipartisan group of lawmakers to the executive mansion for cocktails.
