Most of the great rock music was created in the late 60's to mid 80's, what happened after that?

Question for my fellow rock lovin' GLP buds: why does it seem like most of the truly great rock music was made during the 60's to the 80's?
I can understand it taking off in the 60's with the free thinking, open minded movements which led to Hendrix, Cream, The Who, The Doors, the Stones, etc. breaking out with awesome music.
Then in the 70's, when bands like Zeppelin, Sabbath, Aerosmith, AC/DC etc. hit their stride it took everything to a whole new level.
And in the 80's (some of the cheesy pop music aside), bands were still coming up with killer riffs. So WTF happened after that? It seems like rock music took a nose dive and never really recovered since.
I'm not talking about album sales, I'm talking about the quality of the songs. People often blame the grunge movement but come on, that craze lasted a few years, surely rock could have recovered since then. And no I'm not a geezer longing to relive my youth, I'm actually in my early 20's but I prefer to listen to the types of music mentioned above than most of the stuff from own generation.
