Scientists from the University of Colorado at Boulder say the western half of the Coachella Valley has moved to the northwest .002 of an inch following the Tuesday quake. Geologist Roger Bilham said his devices are accurate to one thousandth of an inch.

"There was a very small offset at two locations on Durmid Hill last week," Bilham told the Desert Sun, referring to a hill at the northern end of the Salton Sea.

Such simultaneous ladder fault movements has long been predicted as a possible precursor to a major quake along the southernmost reach of the San Andreas, which has not had a major earth movement since the year 1680.


Recent earthquake swarms along the southern San Andreas fault could be prelude to a soon to strike massive earthquake. New earthquake research confirms the southern end of the San Andreas fault near Los Angeles is overdue for a Big One.

State officials have already quietly sent out warnings and notices to local govt agencies that the recent and ongoing earthquake swarm near the Salton Sea along the southern San Andreas fault could trigger a massive earthquake.

The southern section of the San Andreas fault known as the Mojave segment begins near the Salton Sea and runs northward into the Los Angeles areas where it meats the San Bernardino Mountains.

The lower section of the fault has not produced a major earthquake in more than three centuries. The new study, which analyzed 20 years of data and is considered one of the most detailed analysis' yet, found that stress has been building up since then, and that the fault could rupture at any moment. The last time the southern section of the San Andreas fault experienced a major earthquake was in 1690. Scientists believe that this section of the fault is most likely to cause a massive earthquake of magnitude 8.0 or greater.


NEW SIMULATIONS SHOW THAT THE CHAIN OF SEDIMENTARY BASINS BETWEEN SAN BERNARDINO AND DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES FORM AN EFFECTIVE WAVEGUIDE THAT CHANNELS WAVES ALONG THE SOUTHERN EDGE OF THE SAN BERNARDINO AND SAN GABRIEL MOUNTAINS. THE FORCE OF AN EARTHQUAKE IN THE SALTON SEA AREA COULD BE "CHANNELED" INTO THE LA BASIN CAUSING MASSIVE DESTRUCTION WITH A QUAKE DURATION OF MORE THAN 60 SECONDS.
