Original Message I just came across these references to fireplace cooking, from centuries past. I have a fireplace I could have been grilling in over coal all winter! This is much better than trying to find propane for an emergency/disaster stove.

First is how to "string roast" birds (chickens, turkeys) in front of your fireplace. You suspend the bird close to the opening of your fireplace and it turns itself! You put a drip pan under it and baste it from time to time.

The second is called a "Tuscan grill". It's basically a cast iron grill on legs that you set into your fireplace over a bed of goals and you grill in your house that way!

There's also something called a "Fireplace crane" that is a cast iron arm that swings out over the fireplace that you can hang a cast iron casserole from.
