House Votes To Give Unemployment To Part-Timers

Posted: May 6, 2009 11:38 AM EDT

The Democrat-led Michigan House has approved legislation that would extend unemployment benefits for people in job training programs and to part-time workers with assistance from the federal stimulus package.

The measures were approved Wednesday by 68-39 votes mostly along party lines in the House. But the legislation may face a tough time getting through the Republican-led Senate, because some parts of it eventually would raise costs for businesses contributing to unemployment insurance programs.

The bills would allow Michigan to get more than $138 million in federal stimulus cash.

Unemployment benefits for those in job training programs would be extended by up to 26 weeks. People seeking to work part-time would become eligible for benefits.
