[quote:KeepingItReal:MV84MTQ3MzlfMTI2NjEyNTBfNEE0MkI2RTc=] Earlier today I posted a trailer from a movie about planet x from the 50's, and also posted something about the Betty and Barney Hill story. It seems that Nancy's version of the Zetas and Planet X are a blend of the two stories. I have been interested in where the alien sub culture began, was it the result of things that really happened being absorbed by popular culture, or did popular culture create the aliens as fiction and this influences how people describe encounters with unknown phenomenon? As far as I can tell, there are no references to encounters with aliens until after the Roswell Incident, which spawned B movies, sci fi novels and tv shows featuring aliens. Actually.the War of the Worlds original broadcast predated the Roswell incident by approximately 10 years, but I am hard pressed to come up with any documented stories of encounters by real people prior to the late 40s and early 50's. Eric Von Daniken explored ancient alien contacts, but his evidence is less than conclusive, and he is focused on proving a link, and lacks objectivity. I suspect that a lot of his information is taken out of context, because the few references that I do have good knowledge of, like the Palenque sarcophagus stone have an explanation in Mayan Culture that has nothing to do with men from outer space. Likewise, the only reference in the Chilam Balaam that could be interpreted as referring to aliens, the "white circles in the sky" also have a secret meaning in the esoteric traditions that again, are not related to the UFO phenomenon, but rather energetic configurations. This makes me suspect the validity of the rest of Von Danikens work. Similarly, I do not trust the material put forth by the likes of Sitchen and Whitley Streiber because they have no first hand experience with the cultural and linguistic context of their sources. They are out to prove a connection and support a preconceived theory, and they make considerable income from it, thus I cannot consider them reliable sources. I do know of references to star people in certain indigenous cultures, but I suspect that this should not be taken literally, as much of indigenous culture should not be. That said, there are things like the Nazca lines in Peru that have yet to be explained. My research on this is far from conclusive and I would be interested in hearing about other information that pushes the origins of human/alien contact stories earlier in time. As I said, I am interested in exploring which came first, the abduction and contactees or popular culture regarding alien life. [/quote]
