Plans to start vaccinating people against swine flu next month have been thrown into doubt after the head of the World Health Organisation said a vaccine would not be ready by then.

Laboratory workers attempt to create a swine flu vaccine in a Scottish biotech firm

WHO director general Dr Margaret Chan told the Guardian: "There's no vaccine. One should be available soon, in August.

"But having a vaccine available is not the same as having a vaccine that has been proven safe.

"Clinical trial data will not be available for another two to three months."
(AND THAT SAYS IT ALL !!)

Health Secretary Andy Burnham had said the first batches were due to arrive in Britain in August and would be eventually be available to everyone.

He said: "We have made very good plans in this country for this eventuality, for being in this situation, and Britain is at the front of the queue in the world for vaccine."(GREAT!!!)

Speaking after Dr Chan's comments, the Chief Medical Officer for England said the first supplies of the vaccine were still expected to arrive towards the end of August.

"We will be getting the 60m doses that we have ordered by the end of the calendar year and in the early autumn we will be getting the first batches through," Sir Liam Donaldson said.

"Now that is assuming that the manufacturers continue to produce it in the way that is scheduled, it is a complex process and sometimes there can be glitches."

He added: "So early autumn, we will have to start assessing which risk groups get the vaccine first but during the course of the winter we will get more and more and we will be able to offer it ultimately to half the population.

Seventeen people have died after contracting swine flu in Britain, while nearly 10,000 have been confirmed with the virus.

Dr Michael Day died on Saturday

A post-mortem examination established that one of the latest victims, a 64-year-old GP from Bedfordshire, died of causes other than swine flu.

Tests are still being carried out on the body of six-year-old Chloe Buckley, as health officials urged the public to remain calm.

Meanwhile, Sky News health correspondent Thomas Moore cautioned that reports of a death rate of one in 200 - as suggested by some experts - applies to one in 200 who have symptoms bad enough to seek medical advice, rather than one in 200 flu cases.

NHS Direct has dealt with more than 198,000 calls about swine flu since April 27.

Monday saw the highest number of calls about swine flu answered by the organisation in a single day.

The WHO has said all countries will need vaccines against the virus because the swine flu pandemic is unstoppable.

A total of at least 429 people have died from the swine flu virus around the world.
