Between 1991 and 2001, the non-religious segment of the United States grew from 14,300,000 to 29,400,000. In terms of absolute growth, that is the fastest in the United States.
The same is true in Australia. In 15 years, from 1991 to 2006, the number of self-identified non-religious in Australia grew from 2,948,888 to 3,706,555.
Given that it is the largest rate of growth in two major superpowers, one of which is arguably the most religious superpower, I think this shows a trend of the first world nations giving up the mythical religions of the past. Of course there will always be clingers, but as each new generation comes along I believe we'll see an increase in the number of atheists.
