Yes, not in California, but another state.

I am now 40 years old. I was extensively tested around the 4th grade. Then in 5th grade all of the kids from the handful of elementary schools in town who were determined to be "gifted" (maybe 25 of us) were shipped off by bus to one particular school.

We attended classes in a portable building, and were treated like "weirdos" by the kids at the school we were taken to. I hated it.

The next year the school district got "gifted" programs at every elementary school, so we were all able to go back to our own schools that we had come from. We had to go to one particular teacher for classes each day. They were forever asking us stupid, sci-fi scenarios about how to design the future and make the world a better place. A bunch of real utpoian, atheistic, Communist crap.
