Now the problem is the "brilliant and tireless engineers" have now forgotten the solutions...

OP that's the only reason we don't go back after   40-50 years...ya know these "brilliant" folks can't even remember if they saw stars or not...

But never fear....even though with all the technology being now light years ahead of the late 60's and no country on earth has yet to get beyond 400 miles for  manned mission....these brilliant minds will dig deeper and deeper and actually remember HOW THEY DID GOT A MANNED MISSION ON THE MOON...

He merely suggested they put a geiger counter on the explorer sat.

A fella by the name of Nicholas Constantine Christofilos suggested the belts surrounded the earth.

Van Allen got the glory and became spokesman.

NCC became director of TOP SECRET belt manipulations using nuclear bombs.
