I just got a call from a buddy of mine who lives in Paia on Maui. Its like 10:30pm there and he is a lifeguard and just got a call notifying him that Civil Defense has been called up in light of a coming tsunami that is expected to hit the island.
He sounded kinda freaked on the phone, they don't know how large this might be and hopes are that it will be a false alarm. Also, a friend of his who works for the fire department told him that firefighter personel have been requested to report to work early in the morning.
The only news item I could find mentioning civil defense being activated was here: [

Anyway, looks like this might be the real deal. Local authorities are at least treating it that way. My friend said in 30 years he has never seen anything like this. Tsunami would not be expected to hit the islands until late tomorrow morning (Sat).
