Cygnus X-1 Black Hole

Recommended Posts

Cygnus X-1

The star indicated in the image is HD226868 and is a blue super giant and is thought to have a mass of about 25 solar masses. It orbits an unseen companion with a period of 5.6 days. The companions mass is calculated to be about 14 solar masses, which is to large to be a neutron star. It is also found to emit the strongest X-ray source seen from earth. A likley candidate for this gravity scource is a black hole with an event horizon with a radius of about 26 km.
