Car That Runs On Air Could Get 117 MPG Says Peugeot Citroen (PHOTOS/ VIDEO)

Peugeot Citroen revealed earlier this week that they've been working on a new vehicle that can run on air. Now the company claims the vehicle will be able to achieve 116 to 117 mpg according to MSN Cars.

This would make the vehicle even more attractive when it is finally released, as people wouldn't have to go to gas stations nearly as much as they do now.

The company predicts that people will save approximately 45 percent on gas if they do chose to buy the Hybrid Air vehicle. Gas in the U.S. was sold at an average $3.31 per gallon this week, and the average car gets around 27 mpg in regular driving according to ABC News.

Some gas-electric hybrid vehicles can obtain 50 mpg, but they can be expensive and less than half of the country owns that type of vehicle. The cost of the vehicle's batteries can also cost a lot as well.

Peugeot Citroen has completed approximately 12,000 miles of testing on the vehicle, and revealed what customers can expect under the hood this week as well.

"We are not talking about weird and wacky machines," said a Peugeot Citroen company spokesman according to ABC News. "These are going to be in everyday cars."

The Hybrid Air is also expected to allow drivers to go close to an hour of in city driving without having to use any gas according to Jean-Baptiste Thomas, who spoke with The Huffington Post earlier this week.

The vehicle works by using a hydraulic pump that's been designed to force compressed air against fluid that activates the four wheels. The pressure then regenerates within 10 seconds if the driver wishes to stop the vehicle according to The Huffington Post.

Peugeot is attempting to become the first manufacturer to sell a four-wheel vehicle that can run just on air.

The first line of Hybrid Air vehicles are expected to be at dealerships by 2016. A price has not be set for the Hybrid Air just yet, but it is expected to sell for at least $1,500 less than an average hybrid vehicle according to Yahoo.
