4-22-09 - DREAM - I was with some well dressed black
men, wearing suits. It didn't seem like the current period of
time, but I didn't have an idea of what time period it was. I was
walking with them, looking for a particular street, and when we got to
the street, they said the address we needed was 943. We went into
a long dark brick building, and the addresses were like apartments
within the building, and went from 943 thru 945.
When we got down to the end of the hallway, we
hadn't found what we were looking for, and a woman came into the doorway
at that end of the building, and introduced herself. She said,
"Hello! My name is Gloria Turnbull!"
Gloria was dressed very chic in a dress suit, and
had a black hat on her head - smallish with a tilt to it. It
seemed to be somewhere between the 20's and 40's type of style hat.
I felt very small standing next to these people now
- I'm almost 6 feet tall myself, and it seemed that they were all about
8 to 9 feet tall standing next to me.
I woke up and fell right back to sleep.
Now I was in one of the apartments, probably 943.
I was trying to do the dishes and the sink didn't have its own water
spigot working, so I got the water from a hose in the next room. I
was told that the water came out of the hose at 2 ft. per second.
I was scrubbing a steel bowl like my dogs use and
there was a lime film on the bottom of the bowl I needed to scrub off.
We were waiting for the building's white picket
fence to be repainted because the old paint was worn and chipped
in spots.
I woke up again, and fell asleep again.
Now I was doing research on the internet, looking
up Gloria Turnbull and found out that she had lost her son, so I started
helping Gloria to find her son.
NOTE: In John Updike's novels, we find that
he writes in metaphors. He has a whole series of books in which he
uses the title's Rabbit - but the stories are about people.
The Bible is also written in metaphors - and we need to keep this in
mind as we go along, because dreams are also given in metaphors.
NOTE: I had another short dreams about the same
number the next day. I was looking at a paragraph of many numbers,
looking for 943, and the closest one was 937.
Then I had a vision of a book page with a black,
white, and grey drawing of a Bay in Greece, and the caption on the
picture was CUE - Greece.
I did some research on CUE Greece and the first
thing that came up with an airport CUE which is Cuevna, Equador.
A good friend of mine had a dream on the 17th like
this:
Dreamed last night about being chased by a highway patrol, then
I saw a huge crater in the ground ;like from a small bomb and
witnessed rapid fire machine gun with people, men and women,
dying. I saw an old fashioned time clock that said 9:46. I was
awakened at that moment by a cacophony of hoot owls. Scary!

Toward the End of Time
John Updike's Toward the End of Time, published in
1997, is a mixture of science fiction, magic realism, and a
journal account written by an older man who feels his world
collapsing around him. The story is written as if it were the
journal of Ben Turnbull, a retired financier who is living an
economically comfortable life in New England despite the chaos and
destruction around him. The majority of the story takes place in
2020, after a massive war between the United States and China.
Despite the failure of the U.S. government, a depopulated Midwest,
food shortages, and marauding teenagers who stone to death people
whom they do not like, the self-indulgent protagonist enjoys
sexual relations with young women and has time to golf and to play
with his grandchildren. The narrator also drifts into fantasies
which are presented so realistically they are hard to distinguish
from what is real. Did Ben Turnbull really kill his second wife?
Did he then have sex with a deer? Did he really witness Moses on
the mountain? In the end, the protagonist, a man whom readers may
not like, reveals a vulnerability with which they may identify.

Chapter IThe Deer
Toward the End of Time is written as if it were the
journal of the protagonist, Ben Turnbull, and it begins with an
entry written in late November of 2019, describing the first snow
of the season. By the end of the first paragraph, the reader knows
that the protagonist is somewhat depressed, unable to find even a
trace of his "childhood exhilaration" and left only with "an
unfocused dread of time." However, in the second paragraph, Ben is
exhilarated, pleased with a new plastic snow shovel, an
improvement over the metal ones of his childhood.
Along with many other subjects, the protagonist pays special
attention to nature and all its transformations. He is also keenly
aware of the people around him and the changes they go through.
Ben analyzes his wife, Gloria, whom he says is always trying to
tame nature by ordering people to trim one plant and uproot
another. Deer have been eating the tender tips of his wife's
shrubbery. Gloria wants Ben to shoot the animals. Ben believes
that his wife secretly longs for his own death, too.
Ben and Gloria live in a sprawling old house on the shore of
Massachusetts Bay. When Gloria spots a deer eating her bushes at
night, she pushes Ben outside with a basket of old gold balls and
tells Ben to throw them at the deer.
Gloria is Ben's second wife. Their relationship began as an
affair, while Ben was married to another woman. On this particular
night, Ben hopes that he and Gloria will have sex, but Gloria sees
the deer again. She decides that she is going to borrow a gun from
one of the neighbors so Ben can shoot it.
The next time that a deer appears, Gloria pushes Ben outside
with the gun. She hollers for Ben to shoot, but Ben does not see
the deer. When he returns to the house, Gloria calls him a
"bastardly coward." Later, when Ben sees the deer again and fires
a shot, Gloria promises to make love to him.
Next, in his journal, Ben ponders the word, "perhaps," thus
introducing the quantum physics concept of probable lives, a theme
that is developed later in the story. Ben also explores some
details he has read about
"Neandert(h)al man." He concludes that
he, too, will one day be "as forgotten, as dissolved back into the
compacted silt" as Neanderthal man. This comment introduces the
subject of death that Ben ponders throughout the novel.
It is now January of 2020, and Ben, a retired partner of an
investment broker firm, travels to Boston to take care of some
clients whom he still serves. During his trip, the reader learns
that there has been a war between the United States and China. Ben
outlines some of the destruction that he sees, the result of heavy
bombing.
The story takes a curious turn at this point, as Ben, at
home again and in what can be described as a fantasy, watches a
deer approach his house. Gloria is away. Ben sees the deer
transform itself into "a young lean-bodied whore," whom he invites
into the house. Ben and the deer have sex. "I tell myself she is a
fantasy," he writes, "a branching not existent in the palpable
universe." Not too much later, Ben writes about Deirdre Lee (whose
first name bears a likeness to the word, deer), a prostitute who
comes to service him. Deirdre is more human than the deer, but
there are still allusions to her being deer-like. So it is not
certain if she is real or imagined. Also confusing is Ben's
statement: "It is not clear to me that Gloria is dead." Then he
writes about having a faint memory of having shot Gloria. There is
little explanation of these events. It is more likely that Ben has
drifted into one of the probable worlds that he mentioned earlier
in reference to quantum physics. Then, during one of their
encounters, Deirdre and Ben decide to explore Ben's old house.
This is a lead-in to Ben's discussion of Egyptian grave robbers,
which ends the chapter.
Chapter IIThe Dollhouse
It is early spring, and Ben notices flower buds that are all
but ready to open. He recalls another spring, while he was still
in college. Through this reverie, Ben introduces his first wife,
Perdita. She was an art major and eventually bore Ben five
children, and Ben relates that he now has ten grandchildrennine
boys and one girl.
Ben is reminded of Perdita when he sees his children and
grandchildren. He then talks about the spouses of his children.
One of his daughters has married an African man, whom Ben believes
has taught his children and his first wife how to be a family,
though they are now all separated.
Next, Ben provides a little more information concerning the
aftereffects of the war. The population of the United States has
been dramatically decreased, so much so that the current president
has offered free farmland to any citizen who is willing to move to
the now-depopulated Midwest.
Ben then refers to Deirdre as if she has moved into his
house. They go shopping together for such domestic items as
washcloths. When Ben looks into the faces of the people at the
mall, he suspects that they think Deirdre is his daughter or an
escort from a nursing home. When they are back at the house, Ben
talks about how Deirdre is ridding the place of furnishings,
especially those belonging to Gloria. Deirdre makes Ben carry rugs
and other furniture to the barn. Memories are stirred when Ben
goes into the barn and sees old children's toys, including some
that were his. He remembers the doll house that he... »

Toward the End of Time is a
novel
by
John Updike, published in
1997.
It is the author's eighteenth novel.
Plot summary
Set in New England, like many of his novels, Toward the
End of Time portrays a world in which the Chinese and the
Americans have attacked one another with nuclear weapons. The
aftermath is shown through retired investment advisor Ben
Turnbull's journal. Though the dollar and the central government
are gone, life in Boston and the surrounding areas goes on thanks
to FedEx and other less reputable entrepreneurs. The book is
divided into five parts: i. The Deer ii. The Dollhouse iii. The
Deal iv. The Deaths v. The Dahlia.
i. The Deer
Ben expresses his uneasiness about his second wife,
Gloria's, obsession with killing the deer who is ravaging her
picture-perfect garden. Clearly unhappy with Gloria, Ben begins an
affair with a prostitute named Deirdre.
ii. The Dollhouse
Ben believes he has slid into an alternate universe when
Gloria disappears and Deirdre takes her place. Ben has the vague
impression he may have shot and killed Gloria. Spin and Phil,
young thugs who collect protection money from Ben, clash with
Deirdre, who takes a more and more authoritative role in the
house.
iii. The Deal
Deirdre leaves Ben for Phil, and Gloria returns. Ben is
relieved that he did not shoot Gloria, and admits that the house
and garden flourish under her influence. Spin is killed by a group
of younger children who set up house in the woods behind Ben's
house and supplant Spin and Phil in the collection business. Ben
helps them establish local legitimacy in exchange for commissions
on their earnings and sexual favors from their young female
companion, Doreen.
iv. The Deaths
Ben discovers he has prostate cancer. During his long
hospital stay, Gloria hires FedEx for whom Phil is now working
to get rid of the residents of the makeshift house.
Metallobioforms designed to clear away large tracts of land for
human exploitation are used to raze the house. Ben sees evidence
that they also devoured and killed the young people. He is left as
impotent to protest Gloria's cruelty as he was left physically
impotent by the prostate surgery.
v. The Dahlia
Gloria's hired deer hunter shoots and kills the young doe
who has been nibbling their garden. Ben cannot participate in
Gloria's triumph or the deer hunter's communion with nature. Ben
regains some control of his bladder, but this is not enough to
erase the impression that he has become a ghost wandering around
in his own house.

It is interesting to note that all of the book's chapters
begin with the letter "D". Also, both of Ben's love interests have
first names beginning with 'D'. His first wife was named Perdita,
which is
Italian for "loss".

Criticism
In a review for the New York Observer entitled, "John
Updike, Champion Literary Phallocrat, Drops One; Is This Finally
the End for Magnificent Narcissists?" (later published in
Consider the Lobster), novelist
David Foster Wallace wrote a scathing critique of Toward
the End of Time. Wallace wrote:

It is, of the total 25 Updike books I've read, far and away
the worst, a novel so mind-bendingly clunky and self-indulgent
that it's hard to believe the author let it be published in
this kind of shape. |

Wallace quotes literary readers he knows who characterize
Updike "just a penis with a thesaurus." Aside from its
protagonist, who, Wallace argues, is fundamentally unlikable, the
novel's prose is so turgid that is distracts "us with worries
about whether Mr. Updike might be injured or ill." Wallace
concludes:

Ben Turnbull's unhappiness is obvious right from the book's
first page. But it never once occurs to him that the reason
he's so unhappy is that he's an asshole.[1] |

In contrast,
Margaret Atwood wrote a very positive review of Toward the
End of Time for the
New York Times, "Memento Mori--But First, Carpe Diem." She
praises Updike's "brilliant metaphors" and describes the central
character Ben Turnbull in his semi-idyllic, upper class rural home
as "a Thoreau run through the meat grinder of the 20th century."
She notes his frequent brutality (both towards himself and
others), but also notes his rueful, evenhanded powers of
observation that "[fall] alike on everything: on flowers, animals,
grandchildren, corpses, copulations; on ancient Egypt and plastic
peanuts; on memory, disgust, dread, lust and spiritual rapture."
She ends with the claim that "As memento mori and its obverse,
carpe diem, Toward the End of Time could scarcely be
bettered."

ARTEMIS AND THE DEER
In
Greek mythology, the deer is particularly associated with
Artemis in her role as virginal huntress.
Actaeon, after witnessing the nude figure of Artemis bathing
in a pool, was transformed by Artemis into a stag that his own
hounds tore to pieces.
Callimachus, in his archly knowledgeable "Hymn III to
Artemis", mentions the deer that drew the chariot of Artemis:
- in golden armor and belt, you yoked a golden chariot,
bridled deer in gold.
One of the Labors of
Heracles was to capture the
Cerynian Hind sacred to Artemis and deliver it briefly to his
patron, then rededicate it to Artemis. His son
Telephos was exposed as an infant on the slopes of Tegea but
nurtured by a doe
Artemis
was one of the most widely venerated of the
Ancient Greek deities and one of the oldest. In
Greek mythology of the classical period, Artemis (Greek:)
was often described as the daughter of
Zeus
and
Leto,
and the twin sister of
Apollo. She was the Hellenic goddess of forests and hills,
child birth, virginity, fertility, the hunt, and often was
depicted as a huntress carrying a bow and arrows. The
deer
and the
cypress were sacred to her. In later Hellenistic times she
even assumed the ancient role of
Eileithyia in aiding childbirth.
Artemis later became
identified with
Selene, a
Titaness who was a Greek moon goddess, and she was sometimes
depicted with a crescent moon above her head. She was also
identified with the Roman goddess
Diana, with the
Etruscan goddess
Artume, and with the Greek or
Carian
goddess
Hecate.

ARTEMIS TWIN BROTHER APOLLO
In
Greek and
Roman mythology, Apollo (in
Greek, Apσllōn or Apellōn), is one of the most
important and many-sided of the
Olympian deities. The ideal of the
kouros (a beardless youth), Apollo has been variously
recognized as a god of light and the sun; truth and prophecy;
archery; medicine and healing; music, poetry, and the arts;
and more. Apollo is the son of
Zeus
and
Leto,
and has a
twin sister, the chaste huntress
Artemis. Apollo is known in Greek-influenced
Etruscan mythology as Apulu. Apollo was worshipped in
both
ancient Greek and
Roman religion, as well as in the modern
Hellenic neopaganism.
As the patron of
Delphi (Pythian Apollo), Apollo was an
oracular god the prophetic deity of the
Delphic Oracle. Medicine and healing were associated with
Apollo, whether through the god himself or mediated through his
son
Asclepius. Apollo was also seen as a god who could bring
ill-health and deadly
plague as well as one who had the ability to cure. Amongst the
god's custodial charges, Apollo became associated with dominion
over
colonists, and as the patron defender of herds and flocks. As
the leader of the
Muses
(Apollon Musagetes) and director of their choir, Apollo
functioned as the patron god of music and
poetry.
Hermes created the
lyre
for him, and the instrument became a common
attribute of Apollo. Hymns sung to Apollo were called
paeans.
In Hellenistic times, especially during the third century
BCE, as Apollo Helios he became identified among Greeks
with
Helios,
god of the sun, and his sister Artemis similarly equated with
Selene,
goddess of the moon.[1]
In Latin texts, however, Joseph Fontenrose declared himself unable
to find any conflation of Apollo with
Sol
among the
Augustan poets of the first century, not even in the
conjurations of
Aeneas and
Latinus in
Aeneid XII (161-215).[2]
Apollo and Helios/Sol remained separate beings in literary and
mythological texts until the third century CE.
NOTE: Apollo is mentioned in the Bible several times,

| 4-7-09 - DREAM - I was working in a
small office. I hadn't been well for some reason and wasn't
working. I was just resting.
I was taken to another upstairs office
by my friend Erv, who drove me when I needed to get
somewhere as I didn't have a car of my own. This place was
where a woman kept the small animals I needed to do my job.
They were very tiny as infants, which is what I was going to
get. She kept these animals in an aquarium in small boxes -
like a small matchbox. The whole place smelled like an
animal lair.
She handed me this tiny box that was
broken on one side, and inside was this cute little creature
that looked like a wolf. I said that we wouldn't be taking
it home that day as we didn't have an aquarium set up for it
yet, and she said okay. But I wondered how we would tell
the difference between the animal that had been picked out
and all the others - except this box was broken on one side
that it was in.
I had seen a full grown animal also-
which was sitting upright like a human and just as large.
It had a regular paw on the left, but on the right, the paw
was very large and looked like a giant club. The left paw
pushed something into place, and the large clubbed right paw
did the work. The woman said, 'They have the right hand of
Apollo!" |

APOLLO IN REVELATION:
1 And the fifth
angel sounded
the trumpet: and I saw a star fall from
heaven upon
the earth. And there was given to him the
key of the
bottomless pit.
A star fall... This may
mean the fall and
apostasy of great and learned
men from the
true
faith. Or a
whole nation falling into
error and
separating from the
church, not having the sign of
God in their
foreheads. And there was given to him the key of the
bottomless pit... That is, to the
angel, not to
the fallen star. To this
angel was
given the power, which is here signified by a
key, of opening
hell.
2 And he opened the
bottomless pit:
and the smoke of the pit arose, as the smoke of a great furnace. And
the sun and the air were darkened with the smoke of the pit.
3 And from the smoke of the pit
there came out locusts upon the earth. And power was given to them, as
the scorpions of the earth have power.
There came out locusts... These may be
devils in
Antichrist's
time, having the appearance of locusts, but large and monstrous, as
here described. Or they may be real locusts, but of an extraordinary
size and monstrous shape, such as were never before seen on earth,
sent to torment those who have not the sign (or seal) of
God on their
foreheads. Some commentators by these locusts understand
heretics, and
especially those
heretics, that sprung from
Jews, and
with them denied the divinity of
Jesus Christ;
as Theodotus,
Praxeas, Noetus,
Paul of Samosata,
Sabellius,
Arius,
etc. These were great enemies of the
Christian
religion; they tormented and infected the
souls of
men, stinging
them like scorpions, with the poison of their
heresies.
Others have explained these locusts, and other animals, mentioned in
different places throughout this
sacred and
mystical book, in a most absurd, fanciful, and ridiculous
manner; they make
Abaddon the
Pope, and the locusts to be
friars mendicant,
etc. Here it is thought proper, not to enter into any controversy upon
that subject, as the inventors of these fancies have been already
answered, and fully refuted by many controvertists: besides, those who
might be imposed on by such chimerical writers, are in these days much
better informed.
4 And it was
commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the
earth nor any green thing nor any tree: but only the
men who have
not the sign of
God on their foreheads.

that they should not
kill them: but that they should torment them five months.
And their torment was as the torment of a scorpion when he striketh a

APOLLYON, or, as it
is literally in the margin of the AV of Revelation 9:11, "a
destroyer," is the rendering of the Hebrew word Abaddon, "the angel of
the bottomless pit."
[And they had a king over them, which is the angel of
the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is
Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.--Rev
9:11]
The Hebrew term is really abstract, and signifies "destruction,"
in which sense it occurs in Job 26:6; 28:22; Proverbs 15:11; and other
passages.
[Hell is naked before him, and destruction hath no
covering.--Job 26:6
Destruction and death say, We have heard the fame thereof with
our ears.--Job 28:22
Hell and destruction are before the LORD: how much more
then the hearts of the children of men?--Prov 15:11]
The angel Apollyon is further described as the king of the
locusts which rose from the smoke of the bottomless pit at the
sounding of the fifth trumpet. From the occurrence of the word in
Psalm 88:11, the Rabbins have made Abaddon the nethermost of the two
regions into which they divided the under world.
[Shall thy lovingkindness be declared in the grave? or
thy faithfulness in destruction?--Psalm 88:11
Hell has seven divisions, one beneath the other. They are
called Sheol, Abaddon, Beer Shahat, Tit ha-Yawen, Sha'are Mawet,
Sha'are Zalmawet, and Gehenna.-- The Legends of the Jews,
Louis Ginzberg]
But that in Revelation 9:11 Abaddon is the angel, and not the
abyss, is perfectly evident in the Greek. There is no authority for
connecting it with the destroyer alluded to in 1 Corinthians 10:10;
and the explanation, quoted by Bengel, that the name is given in
Hebrew and Greek, to show that the locusts would be destructive alike
to Jew and Gentile, is far-fetched and unnecessary.

The etymology of Asmodeus, the king of the demons in Jewish
mythology, seems to point to a connection with Apollyon, in his
character as "the destroyer," or the destroying angel.

APOLLYON. The Greek name, meaning "Destroyer," given in
Revelation 9:11 for "the angel of the bottomless pit" (in Hebrew
called Abaddon), also identified as the king of the demonic "locusts"
described in Revelation 9:3-10...In one manuscript, instead of
Apollyon the text reads "Apollo," the Greek god of death and
pestilence as well as of the sun, music, poetry, crops and herds, and
medicine. Apollyon is no doubt the correct reading. But the name
Apollo (Gk Apollon) was often linked in ancient Greek writings with
the verb apollymi or apollyo, "destroy." From this time of Grotius, "Apollyon"
has often been taken here to be a play on the name Apollo. The locust
was an emblem of this god, who poisoned his victims, and the name "Apollyon"
may be used allusively in Revelation to attack the pagan god and so
indirectly the Roman emperor Domitian, who liked to be regarded as
Apollo incarnate.

APOLLO, one of the most important and many-sided of the ancient
Greek divinities. Apollo was the son of Zeus and Leto and the twin
brother of Artemis [Diana]; he was born on Delos, where Leto had fled,
persecuted by the jealousy of Hera...
Apollo's origins (perhaps Oriental) are quite uncertain; his
name yields no convincing Greek etymology, although he became the most
thoroughly Greek of all gods...A remarkable feature of his cult was
his characteristic, though not only, way of giving oracles, especially
at Delphi, to possess the priestess and speak through her mouth in a
way reminiscent of Siberian shamanism.
His oracles, especially the Delphic, were consulted on all
manner of subjects, and good advice was often given, especially on
such matters as colonization, by the obviously well-informed clergy,
who "edited" the utterances of the priestess...
Someone in the fifth century BC started a wholly ungrounded
theory that Apollo was identical with the sun. This became popular in
later times and lingers in poetical expressions such as "Phoebus 'gins
arise," meaning that the sun rises; Phoebus ("bright, pure") is one of
Apollo's titles. It also led to his identification with real sun gods.
There were numerous representations of the god in Greek art,
from the archaic statues of the sixth century BC to those of the later
period in which he appears as the ideal of youthful manliness and
beauty. His worship was taken over by the Romans, who dedicated a
temple to him in 430 BC and instituted gamees in his honour (the ludi
Apollinares) in 212 BC. He became one of the chief Roman gods in the
age of Augustus, who erected a temple to him on the Palatine...

Delphi under towering Parnassus, where Apollo's oracle was,
plays an important part in mythology. Castalia was its sacred spring;
Cephissus its river. It was held to be the center of the world, so
many pilgrims came to it, from foreign countries as well as Greece. No
other shrine rivaled it.
Apollo at Delphi was a purely beneficent power, a direct link
between gods and men, guiding men to know the divine will, showing
them how to make peace with the gods; the purifier, too, able to
cleanse even those stained with the blood of their kindred.

Terrors had always made excellent business for Apollo, and there
were never worse terrors than the plagues and earthquakes in the
Antonine and Severan age. At Didyma, Apollo's cult was connected by
its very origins to the bahishment of plague: in the 250s, Apollo
still recalled how he had "shamed" the threads of the Fates and kept
off the epidemic....we know about Apollo's remedies in a fascinating
selection of oracles...They carry no date, but the main four probably
belong in the great epidemic of the 160s when Roman troops were
returning from the East and brought home a disease whose effects read
horribly like smallpox...
Three cities have left us pieces of Clarian Apollo's oracles on
plague: Pergamum, Callipolis (near modern Gallipoli) and humble little
Caesarea Trochetta, a small town in Lydia...The god pitched his style
very high and lamented the disaster (crying "Woe! Woe! to each
city)...None of these texts explained the plague; they only prescribed
remedies... Only part of the god's remedy survives, but it runs true
to his old-fashioned manner. The "divine law," he said, required his
clients to draw pure water from seven fountains, which they had
fumigated carefully. They must then sprinkle their houses with these
"nymphs who have become kindly" and must set up an image of Apollo the
archer, bow in hand, in the middle of their plain. There, presumably,
he would "shoot away" the invading enemy, the plague itself.
Callipolis was ordered to set up a similar statue, "the
warder-off of plague," and was also told to offer blood from
sacrificial animals to the "gods below the earth" and to burn all the
animals' meat with spices. The pyre of this holocaust was to be
sprinkled with "shining wine and grey sea water": the victims, a goat,
and a sheep, must be black...
Of the three texts, the finest is Pergamum's, which moves in
stately hexameters and spends the first nine lines on flattery of the
citizens' ancestry, their closeness to the gods and their especial
honour from Zeus himself. On Pergamum's steep hill, said Apollo, the
infant Zeus had been placed just after childbirth: his statement
refuted a host of competing cities which claimed that they, not
Pergamum, had received the newly born god. It was no wonder that the
people and council of Pergamum decreed that the reply should be
inscribed on pillars and displayed "on the agora and the temples." It
also offered advice. Apollo wished to please his son, Asclepius, who
resided so conspicuously in the city...he told [them] to sing a hymn
to a particular god while their fellow citizens feasted and sacrificed
in support...

| In
Revelation 12, the major opponent of the church is also
exposed. He is the terrifying red dragon with seven heads, ten
horns and seven crowns on his head. Revelation clearly
identifies the dragon or monster. He is "that ancient serpent
called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray"
(12:9, with 20:2).
Satan's earthly proxy
the beast from the sea also has seven heads and ten horns,
and he is scarlet in color as well (13:1; 17:3). Satan's
character is mirrored in his earthly representatives. The
dragon personifies evil. Since ancient mythology had many
references to dragons, John's audience would have understood
that the dragon of Revelation 13 represented a cosmic enemy.
Exactly what the
dragon's seven heads represent is not immediately clear.
However, given John's use of seven as a numerical symbol of
completeness, perhaps this suggests the universal nature of
Satan's power and that he completely embodies within himself
all evil. The dragon also has seven diadems or royal crowns on
his heads. They could represent Satan's spurious claim against
Christ. As the Lord of Lords, it is to Jesus that all crowns
of authority belong. He is the one who will be crowned with
many diadems (19:12, 16).
We are told the
dragon had "swept a third of the stars out of the sky and
flung them to earth" (12:4). This fraction is used several
times in Revelation. Perhaps we should interpret it as meaning
a significant minority.
We are also given a
short biography of the woman's "male child," a reference to
Jesus (12:5). Revelation is here telling the story of the
Christ event in relationship to Satan's unsuccessful attempt
to thwart God's plan.
The dragon tried to
kill or "devour" the woman's child at the moment of his birth
(12:4). This is a reference to a historical situation. When
Herod heard that the Jewish messiah had been born in
Bethlehem, he killed all the infants in the city, which would
have resulted in the baby Jesus' death (Matthew 2:16). Jesus,
of course, escaped with his parents to Egypt. Revelation tells
us Satan the devil was really behind the human plot to murder
Jesus to "devour" him.
Some commentators
think that Satan's attempt to "devour" the woman's child also
included his tempting of Jesus (Matthew 4:1-11), his obscuring
of Jesus' gospel message (Matthew 13:39), and his inspiring
the crucifixion of Christ (John 13:2). By killing Jesus
through the crucifixion, the devil may have assumed he had won
a victory over the Messiah. In fact, it was Jesus' death
itself that saved the world and sealed the devil's fate (John
12:31; 14:30; 16:11; Colossians 2:15; Hebrews 2:14).
Through his death and
resurrection, Jesus, the child of the woman, "was snatched up
to God and to his throne" (12:5). That is, he was resurrected
to immortality. God has exalted the glorified Jesus to a
position of universal authority (Philippians 2:9-11). He is
destined to "rule all the nations with an iron scepter"
(12:5). He will shepherd the nations with loving, but absolute
authority. These words "rule all nations" clearly identify
to whom the child symbol refers. He is God's anointed Messiah,
destined to reign in God's kingdom over all the earth (Psalm
2:9; Revelation 19:15).

The Bible:
Revelation
One of the key verses in understanding the book of
Revelation
is chapter 17:9-11 which says, "The 7 heads are 7 hills on which the
woman sits. They are also seven kings. 5 have fallen, 1 is, the
other has not yet come" (NIV). This seems to refers to the Roman
empire and seems to best fit the kings as follows:
- Julius Caesar (49-44 BC.)
- Augustus C.(31 BC-14 AD
- Tiberius C. (14-37 AD.)
- Caligula C. (37-41 AD)
- Claudius C. (41-54 AD)
- Nero Caesar (54-68 AD)
The 5 fallen kings means Nero is emperor (Gentry 1989b, 104).
This is how Josephus counted the emperors in Antiquities of the
Jews (Book 19.1.11). Others count Vespasian or Titus as the last
king.
Persecution
Nero was the first to persecute the Christians. He blamed the
burning of Rome on the Christians in 64 AD. Nero used the Christians
as human torches to light his garden. This means that the Great
Tribulation of 7 years had already begun. This persecution was the
war with the beast, Nero.
Historian Schaff states, "There is scarcely another period in
history so full of vice, corruption, and disaster as the six years
between the Neronian persecution and the destruction of Jerusalem"
(1910, 1:391; Gentry, 1989b,127).
In ancient times letters were used as numbers. For example
A=1, B=2, C-3 and so forth. So names had a certain numerical value.
The Hebrew spelling of Nero Caesar (Neron Kaiser) adds up to
exactly 666. There is a textual variant in
Revelation
13:18 with the number 616 which is probably the Latin equivalent of
Nero Caesar.
Worship of the Beast
Emperor cult worship is well known in the Roman empire. Nero
claimed to be the equal of the god
Apollo.
Seneca taught Nero that he was destined to become the
revelation
of divine Augustus and the god
Apollo(Seneca
On Clemency 1.1.6; Gentry 1989b, 63).
Revival of the Beast
Revelation
13:10 relates to Neros death. Nero who killed with the sword would
die by a sword that he put in his own throat June 9, 68 AD
(Suetonius Nero 49; Gentry, 1989b, 63). The death of Nero
meant the end of the Julio-Claudian line of emperors. Civil wars
broke out. Vespasian revived the empire and saved it from ruin.
There were also rumors that Nero was still alive and would return to
power.
The Temple
In the Book of
Revelation
the Temple is still standing which indicates that this happened
before 70 AD when the city and temple of Jerusalem was destroyed by
Titus.
Fall of Babylon
The fall of Babylon in chapter 18 of
Revelation
seems to refer to the fall of Jerusalem. The Jews have rejected
Christ. Therefore they have become apostate and have committed
spiritual adultery with Rome. Another popular view sees Babylon as
referring to Rome.
Coming of Christ
Christs coming was in Judgment like the Day of the Lord in
the Old Testament. The judgment was the destruction of Jerusalem and
the Temple by the hands of Titus. Christ is ruling and reigning now.
There is no need for a temple for he is the temple.
Sealing the Saints - 144,000
In
Revelation chapter 7 144,000 Christian Jews in Israel are
sealed so they will be safe. In Matthew 24:16 they were commanded to
flee to the mountains for safety which was the transjordan mountains
where Pella was located. Eusebius tells how the Jews in Jerusalem
were commanded by
revelation
to escape to Pella (Eusebius Ecclesiastical History, 3.5.3)
There is also a great multitude of Christians from every nation.
Clearly Christians went through this tribulation.
Parallel Passages
Matthew 24 and Luke 21 are parallel passages to
Revelation.
Clearly they point to
the fulfillment of scripture in 70 AD with the destruction of
Jerusalem which is the abomination of Desolation. This refers back
to the book of Daniel chapter 9:27.
The Two Witnesses
The two witnesses in
Revelation
11 who are killed are probably Jesus who rises again and Stephen who
was stoned. The early church believed they were Enoch and Elijah or
Jeremiah.
100 lb. Hailstones
Revelation
16:21 tells how huge hailstones fell from heaven weighing a talent
which is about 100 pounds. Josephus describes 100 lb. white stones
coming from Roman catapults down on the Jews in Jerusalem (Jewish
Wars, Book 5.6.3).
Letters to 7 Churches
The letters to the seven churches indicate a time period that
best fits the time in the decade of the 60s AD (Gentry 1989b,
175-80).
I Come Quickly
Revelation
is written in the context that everything is going to happen soon
(Rev. 1:19). Christ is coming back soon (Rev. 22:7,12,20),
even in their generation.
This Generation
This generation that had pierced Christ would not pass away
until all was fulfilled (Matthew 24:34) which culminated in the fall
of Jerusalem.
Date of the Book of
Revelation
According to Aunes new commentary,
Revelation
was probably written and edited in several stages. The earliest part
was probably written before the fall of Jerusalem and then edited in
the reign of Domitian or later (Vol. 52A lvii-iii). To me the
description of the Great Tribulation of
Revelation
best fits the three and a half years before the fall of Jerusalem.
Josephus describes some of these terrible conditions. I highly
recommend David Aunes three volume in depth commentary on the Book
of Revelation
which is part of the Word Biblical Commentary series.
There is a very interesting new book entitled
Social-Science Commentary on the Book of
Revelation
by Bruce J. Malina and John J. Pilch and published by Fortress
Press, 2000. They posit that the Book of
Revelation
in the Bible
is an astral prophecy. The visions are seen as interpretations of
the constellations in the sky. The first 11 chapters were probably
written before the fall of Jerusalem of 70 AD.
Christ holds Seven Stars
In the first chapter of
Revelation
(1:16) Christ is described as holding seven stars in his right hand
and a sword (comet shaped like a sword) proceeds out of his mouth.
Josephus states, "There was a star resembling a sword, which stood
over the city (Jerusalem), and a comet, that continued a whole year"
(Wars of the Jews, Book VI, Chapter V.3). Josephus could be
referring to Halley's comet that appeared in 66 AD which looked like
it was coming out the mouth of the constellation Orion, Hercules, or
Bootes from Jerusalem. A comet was an ominous sign warning of danger
in the ancient world. This might have marked the beginning the
Tribulation period. The seven stars might be the constellation
Corona Borealis that has seven stars. The seven candlesticks are
most likely the seven wandering stars in ancient times (5 visible
planets plus the sun and moon). Stars were seen as angels, divine
souls (Philo of Alexandria On the Giants ii, 6-8). As
Christs constellation rises out of the South (Where Hades was), it
symbolizes Christs resurrection from the dead. Thunder was seen as
the voice of God.
The Throne of God
In
Revelation chapter four the throne of God is described. The
throne of God is probably best seen as the constellation Cassiopeia
that was a throne. The glassy sea probably refers to the Milky Way.
The four living creatures would be the four constellation in the
four corners of the heaven that signal the four seasons, Leo the
Lion, Taurus the bull, Scorpio with a human face, and Pegasus the
flying eagle in ancient times. The twenty-four elders are the 24
hours or decans that the sky was divided into during the course of a
day in ancient astronomy. See the famous Hellenistic Dendera
Zodiac.
The Lamb of God
In
Revelation chapter five the constellation Aries (male lamb)
is probably seen as the Lamb of God. The altar is probably the
constellation right below Aries. Aries was identified with Israel
and Syria in ancient times (Ptolemy, Tetrabiblos).
Horses, Trumpets, and Bowls
Maline and Pilch think that the horses, trumpets, and bowls in
Revelation
refer to comets that look like these objects (p. 103-106;
Tetrabiblos II, 90-91 LCL). There are six notable comets during
the reign of Nero. In the last column the higher the number the more
important the comet (0-10). The information is from Chronology of
Eclipses and Comets AD 1-1000 by D. Justin Schove, 1984 (p.
287).

The Four Horsemen
The four horsemen are from the four corners of the heavens.
Each corner has its own cosmic color. This points to a certain
planet in the constellations at the four corners of the cosmos. The
Constellation Taurus is identified with the South, the color red,
and the planet Mars. Scorpioman is identified with the North, black,
and Mercury. Leo is identified with the East, white, and Jupiter
(Green/blue). Thunderbird (Pegasus) is identified with the West,
pale, Venus (white; Malina and Pilch, 2000, p.111).
The 5th Seal-Altar
When the 5th seal is opened, John sees an altar with souls
under it that were martyred for the word of God (Rev. 6:9). I
suggest that the altar be identified with the great square of
Pegasus, and the souls should be seen as the stars in the Milky
Way.
The Bottomless Pit
In
Revelation 9 the 5th angel sounded and a star fell from
heaven with the key to the bottomless pit. He opens the pit and
smoke ascends with locusts coming out of the smoke that can sting
like a scorpion for 5 months. I suggest that the star is the planet
Venus that descends in the sky. Venus was thought to descend into
Hades in ancient times. The Bottomless Pit is probably the South
pole axis of the sky where there are no stars, and the Milky Way
looks like smoke ascending from this pit. The constellations Scorpio
and Sagittarius seem to guard the pit, the entrance way to Hades
where the smoke ascends up forever. The 5 months are the time that
the constellations Scorpio and Sagittarius can be seen in the sky at
night. The locusts look like the ancient description of the centaur
constellation Sagittarius.
In ancient times the Milky Way was identified with the river
Styx. Souls would make their way from Hades up the Milky Way to
Heaven (p.190).
Book of
Revelation Monsters
In the Book of
Revelation
there are several monsters or dragons described. The Greek New
Testament uses drakon
12 times
only in the book of
Revelation
which the KJV translates as "dragon" (Rev.
12-13,
16:13, 20:2).
There is a red dragon in
Revelation
12:1-18.
Boll believes that the dragon corresponds best with the
constellation Hydra which extends through one third of the zodiac.
Just above the Hydra are the constellations Corax with 7 stars
corresponding to 7 heads, and Crater with 10 stars corresponding to
10 horns, or 10 dorsal fins. Another possibility is the ancient
constellation of scorpio (Malina and Pilch, 2000 p.165).

On today's star charts I think the dragon (which means
serpent) should be identified with the constellation Serpens (Caput
and Cauda connected with ten stars). The seven heads would be the
constellation Corona (crown) Borealis which consists of 7 stars.
This serpent is right at the feet of the constellation Virgo and
Hercules. The Archangel Michael would be the constellation Hercules
waiting to make war with the serpent (Rev.
12:7).

The woman of
Revelation
12
should be identified with the constellation Virgo. The woman is Mary
who gives birth to Jesus. The
12 stars
represents the
12 tribes
of Israel. The 13 stars of the constellation Virgo may represent the
12
tribes plus Christ (the bright star Spica?). Another possibility is
that the constellation Bootes represents the baby Jesus, and Mary's
crown is the Big Dipper plus Canes Venatici.
The red dragon in
Revelation
12 has
seven heads similar to the leviathan in Ugaritic and Psalm 74:14
(Gibson, 50, 68; Walace, 290), and the Set-Typhon, red crocodile, of
Egypt (NIV note
12:3).
Marriage of the Lamb (Rev.19)
When there was a conjunction of planets, it was seen as a
marriage in the ancient world. There was a conjunction of Venus and
Jupiter in 67 AD in the constellation Ares (the male lamb). There
was a similar conjunction 70 years earlier in 2 BC which some think
was the
Star of Bethlehem.
Christ's Coming in Judgment (Rev.19)
Christ comes and fights the armies of the earth (Rev.19:19).
The beast and false prophet and thrown into the lake of fire. There
seems to be a great battle in heaven in May 70 AD. The planets Mars,
Mercury, Venus and the sun seem to gather together for battle in the
constellation Ares. Mars may represent the Beast while Mercury would
be the false prophet. Venus (White) would represent Christ riding on
a white horse coming to battle the beast. By next month the planets
Mars and Mercury disappear from the sky as if cast into the lake of
fire (the fiery sunset), but Venus rises to be the bright and
morning star (Rev. 22:16).

3-31-01 - DREAM - I was looking at a web page
about the three phases of the
sun. The page
included 3 animated graphics at the top of the page. One graphic was
long and wide, and two smaller animated graphics were on either side
of it. Then there was 3 paragraphs describing the 3 phases of the
sun.
I woke up, and went back to sleep, in which I was trying to figure
out what the three phases of the
sun were from
the activities going on in the dream.
Dream 2: Scene one took place in the lobby of my apartment building.
There were two other women with me. The blonde woman was describing
her husband and I thought I knew him from high school. I asked her
for his last name and she got all upset and challenging, like I was
trying to take him away from her. I asked her again for her last
name, which she reluctantly gave it to me in a mumble I couldn't
understand. She was very antagonistic.
The other woman, who had dark hair, I didn't recognize at first, but
she knew who I was. She said that she had gone to grade school with
me and gave me her name as DeGuere. I thought her name was Tate, but
I had to go along with the name she gave me. She said she had carved
her name on my desk, and I not only knew it, I was the only one who
could pronounce it. She seemed quite thrilled with that.
She calmed the other woman down, and I left there, thinking that the
three phases of the
sun were
fear, sharing, and love.
The second scene took place on a city street. It seems that I had
turned on a water spigot that had a long water=hose attached to it,
and the sprinkler head was underneath a silver car parked at the
curb. The whole street was flooded. A large bus went by, and I went
back to the car and pulled the water=hose out from under the car. I
went back to the spigot and made sure that it was turned off this
time. I then walked through the water up to my ankles, making sure
that the water was indeed going down now and the water was indeed
off.
Scene three took place at my old grade school. I felt quite lucid
now, and I tentatively opened the front door because I knew Painter
Bob was going going to be on the front steps, with a red rose for
me.
I opened the door and there stood Painter Bob dressed all in white
just as I knew he would be. He was holding a red silk rose in his
hands and he brought it down the steps and gave it to me. He said
his name was 'Professor" or something else French sounding that was
similar to that name. He then went off to the right and I started to
follow him.
I could now hear the owner of the school coming down the steps,
talking to another man. I could hear their conversation, though I
couldn't quite make out what they were talking about.
I scooted out of the lobby and into the hallway just in time before
the owner saw me. However, they were coming right behind me, and I
scooted down the hallway of the school, always just in time to get
out of sight before they came along behind me.
I saw that in the schoolroom the painters were all Oriental, Asian,
Chinese, Japanese. They were writing on the blackboards, moving
books around, painting the rooms, remodeling.
I scooted into a classroom, just ahead of the owner and his
companion. I found myself in a small stone room, with two doors, one
to the classroom, and one to the hallways.
While I stood there, one of the oriental painters came into the room
and handed me a book titled, "Symphony of Golf". Then I saw one that
was about some kind of mechanics. That one was shrink-wrapped in
plastic so I couldn't open it.
As I woke up, I saw a screen that said 'LOVE' at the top, and was a
picture of a string of heart shaped leaves on a vine that were
pastel colored. It was really a loving picture.
Here again, I analyzed in the dream, that the meaning of the three
phases of the sun
were love, sharing, and fear.

What's Going on Currently With
The Sun
This past year there has been a lot of discussion about the
sun which
I've written on prior to this, but last night was the largest solar
flare (CME) of the last 11 year cycle. Though I was used to seeing
Aurora Borealis in the 60's in Wisconsin, there was never any
thought about being afraid of them like there is now. Of course, we
didn't have the technology back then that was flying in space which
the CMEs interfere with. There were no satellites back then, or at
least just 1 or 2, no cells phones, and nobody worried too much
about radio signals. Things have definitely changed in the last 40
years. So, it's no wonder I dreamed about the
sun. However,
there was more to my dream than the physical
sun ... much
more ...
Aside from the 11-year and 22-year cycles, there is also the
45-year Double-Hale solar magnetic cycle reflected in storminess and
high tide. The all-planet synod, when all the planets are on one
side of the Sun,
which can influence solar activity, creates a 178- to 179-year solar
cycle that is reflected in Greenland ice cores, and Hudson Bay
sediment anomalies.
Solar cycles are correlated with sea level, atmospheric pressure,
and surface air temperatures in summer, and especially over the
oceans in winter. Ozone varies with the long-term solar cycle, as
does upper atmospheric airborne particles (stratospheric aerosols),
and shifts in climate. The extent of Newfoundland's ice cover for
the period between 1860 and 1988 has been correlated with solar
activity. An influx of air from the uppermost (stratospheric) layer
of the atmosphere into the layer below (troposphere) has been
observed three to four days after solar flares.
Increased geomagnetic activity takes place around solar
maximum. The size of storms, referred to as the Vorticity Area Index
(VAI), increases during solar maximum, when the SBC sweeps by. The
vertical electric field near the South Pole of the geomagnetic field
(GMF) is at a minimum a few days after the SBC, but local winter
shows a large effect (amplitude) with a maximum, for example, at
Zugspitze in the Alps.

At 0645 UTC this morning [7/19/00], an M6.4 flare was
observed. This was a long duration flare event that ended at 0750 UTC.
Radio sweep activity, indicative of a coronal mass ejection, was also
detected. This follows yesterday's three long duration M-Class events, of
which none were above M5 [major flare threshold] but all may have produced
CMEs.

CMEs that were observed, the SEC has issued magnetic storm watches for
magnetic-A indices of >50 for July 15, 16, and 17.
These are the
highest level of magnetic storm watches issued by the SEC. This is
probably due to the high strength of the flare/CME event, in
combination with the geoeffective position on the solar disk that
the active region is in.
The strong proton

Scientists Say Solar Flare Could Disrupt Power
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A huge solar flare produced by a large sunspot
group is expected to produce a geomagnetic storm that could disrupt
electric power grids and satellite operations, U.S. government
scientists predicted.
The flare spewed out billions of tons of plasma and charged particles
Friday that are expected to reach the Earth's magnetic field when it
is
Saturday afternoon on the U.S. East Coast, the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said.
NOAA's Space Environment Center in Boulder, Colo., which detected the
flare, predicted that a geomagnetic storm could last until Monday. The
charged particles are making the 93 million mile trip toward Earth at
3
million mph, it said.
"The storm is expected to reach strong to severe levels ... which can
adversely affect satellite operations and power grids," the center
warned in a statement Friday.
NOAA predicted similar disruptions last month after a solar flare
erupted on June 7. But the emissions from that flare were harmlessly
deflected by the Earth's magnetic shield, leaving electricity,
satellite
and communications companies with only minor problems.
The latest solar flare already has caused some effects on Earth,
including radio blackouts on the sunlit side of the planet, the center
said.
The solar activity also should give mid-latitude areas, including the
U.S. cities of Washington, New York, Denver and Seattle a good chance
of
seeing the Aurora Borealis on Saturday night through Sunday morning,
the
center said.
NASA's ACE satellite, in orbit about 1 million miles from Earth, will
detect any approaching geomagnetic storms and provide NOAA with a
warning about an hour before they reach Earth's magnetic field, it
said.
The recent flares erupted during largest solar radiation storm since
October 1989, the center said.
In March of 1989, a solar storm knocked out the electrical system in
all
of Quebec and destroyed a large power transformer in New Jersey.

Region 10656 maintains an ominous
size and spawned a major class X1.0 solar x-ray flare at 18:12 UTC on 13
August. 2004. The event was fairly brief and was not associated with
substantial radio emissions. In addition, current LASCO imagery does not
reveal any significant Earthward-directed coronal mass ejection activity.
Another fairly short-duration major class M7.4 flare is in-progress at the
time of this writing from Region 10656. Although it, too, does not appear
to be associated with any significant radio emissions. It is too early to
determine if any coronal mass ejection activity will accompany this event.
The potential for additional major flare activity remains high.

Hi Kent, this is absolutely amazing!!! I just saw it in broad
daylight at 10:30 am EST.
It must be exceedingly bright, and it is huge.
The nucleus appears to be about the size of the Sun disk.
To see it, use a roof line to block out the Sun.
It is about a hand span above the Sun (in the am), and a little to the left.

Granted the comet will not be seen
outside of twilight, but some of the estimates of what the comet's maximum
brightness will be on January 12 and 13 indicate it might be a fairly easy
object to see in evening twilight. Right now, it seems the maximum
magnitude might reach -1.5 to -8.7. If the latter is true, the comet would
be visible in broad daylight! --G

am pulling up starry nite and
shows an unnamed comet at RA(J/2000)
RA 2 hrs 28.47m and DEC 9 degrees 16.117' at 2.37 magnitude. about
0.881 au. We cant see it due to the snow storm. Any one seen it yet?
Someone needs to take a look at the path on this
comet, according to starry nite it is really close to us. I just
updated the files and now shows another untitled comet.
Here is the screen shot. The white
dot on the tan line is earth. this comet comes really close. Maybe I
am reading it wrong. Can someone else make any sense..

Feed on the 13th......almost every monitor looked like these. It had
calmed back down when I looked yesterday.

My husband, a native elder, sensed
the comet last evening and went to the window. He called me to see it
and I almost panicked! It was between two mountains and looked so
large that I thought it was Niburu and we had only days left to
prepare for 'whatever'. This morning, with clear skies, the whole
family saw it for some time. It was amazing (looked huge still) and
not so ominous as last night. I must say, though, it does portend many
changes in this paradigm, we feel. As natives we rarely give in to
fear but as a mother, I panic at the thought of some of my children
being in large cities at this time. |

name of a website. Clinton and the elder Bush apparently have a warning
website for 2007, it's an org. They are basically urging people to
PREPARE. I also have emergency tests for L.A. area used to be once a week
now is 8 times a day. Please get your sleuths to find out what the name of
the website is (couldn't remember this morning) and what is going on.

Stunning Comet's Size Shocks Scientists

Comet
McNaught, the so-called Great Comet of 2007, has
been identified as the biggest comet measured to date,
according to scientists, whose calculations were based on the
comet's overall influence in space.
Instead of using the length of the
comet's tail to measure the scale of the comet, astronomers
used data from the ESA/NASA
Ulysses spacecraft to determine the size of the region of
space disturbed by the comet's presence a cosmic wake across
the solar system.
Through analysis of magnetometer data,
scientists found evidence of a decayed shockwave surrounding
the comet, which was created when ionized gas emitted from the
comet's nucleus joined the fast-flowing particles of the solar
wind. That, in turn, caused the solar wind around the comet to
abruptly slow down.

McNaught was discovered by
astronomer Robert H. McNaught
in August 2006. In January and February 2007, Comet
McNaught became the brightest
comet visible from Earth for the past 40 years.

Serendipitously, the robotic Ulysses
spacecraft made an unexpected crossing of
Comet McNaught's tail
in 2007, which allowed astronomers to collect valuable and
pertinent data.
Ulysses encountered
McNaught's tail of ionized gas
downstream of the comet's nucleus, at a distance of more than
1.5 times the distance between the Earth and the sun. That's
about 139 million miles (224 million km). The average distance
between the Earth and sun, called 1 astronomical unit, is
about 93 million miles (150 million km).
This was far longer than the spectacular
dust tail that was visible from Earth in 2007.
Ulysses' 2007 encounter with
McNaught was one of three
unplanned encounters that Ulysses made with comet tails during
its 19-year mission, which ended in 2009. The other encounters
included
Comet Hyakutake in
1996. Hyakutake is the
current record-holder for the comet with the longest measured
tail.
Measuring a comet
But the data
collected from Ulysses' encounter with
McNaught allowed scientists to gauge the size of
that comet.
"It was very difficult to observe
Comet McNaught's
plasma tail remotely in comparison with the bright dust
tail, so we can't really estimate how long it might be," said
Dr. Geraint Jones of University College London's
Mullard Space Science
Laboratory, who will present the findings at the Royal
Astronomical Society National Astronomy Meeting in Glasgow,
Scotland, on April 13.
"What we can say is that Ulysses took
just 2.5 days to traverse the shocked solar wind surrounding
Comet Hyakutake, compared
to an incredible 18 days in shocked wind surrounding Comet
McNaught," Jones said. "This
shows that the comet was not only spectacular from the ground,
it was a truly immense obstacle to the solar wind."
Scientists also compared the crossing
times for other comet encounters, which further revealed the
huge scale of Comet McNaught.
The Giotto spacecraft's encounter with Comet
Grigg-Skjellerup in 1992, for
example, took less than an hour from one shock crossing to
another. Similarly, it took only a few hours to cross the
shocked region of the famed Halley's Comet.
In 2007, the nucleus of Comet
McNaught was estimated to be
less than 15 miles (25 km), but Jones used a different measure
to calculate the comet's scale.
"The scale of an active comet depends
on the level of outgassing
rather than the size of the nucleus," Jones explained. "Comet
nuclei aren't necessarily active over their entire surfaces;
what we can say is that McNaught's
level of gas production was clearly much higher than that of
Hyakutake."

Kent Moedl Steadman (1942 - 2008) was
born January 17, 1942, during a snow storm at his great-Aunt Marys in
Sandy, UT. In much the same way as he entered, Kent left this world at the
age of 66, when his heart gave out while playing in the snow with his
grandson at his home in
Burien, WA.
Kent received his Master's of Arts from Brigham
Young University in Utah. He was a highly respected art teacher at Fresno
City College for 23 years. After retirement, Kent continued to serve as a
mentor and teach others about the art of love, intelligence, creativity,
and compassion. Born with a disability that he overcame through art and
music, Kent understood the joy of being different. A troubadour and
vagabond, many will remember his music, which he believed to be the true
expression of the soul. Kent was a pioneer on the internet with his site,
http://www.cyberspaceorbit.com/, where he shared his philosophy with many
people. His playful sense of humor always charmed and uplifted his friends
and loved ones.

| All that preceded this was during sun cycle 23, and
we are not entering sun cycle 24. Right now, the sun seems
almost dead in comparison, but it really isn't.
Here is 2008 and 2009 spaceweather - which I'm doing
in honor of Kent Steadman - its not as good as he does it. But the
sun doesn't stop shining and neither did Kent.

Solar Storm 2012?
This latest striking design, situated on
Rutlands Farm just outside the Stone Circle of Avebury village
has an uncanny connection to some rather alarming news which has
come to light about our own Sun. According to calculations a
huge Solar Storm could hit the planet earth in only three years
time. That's right 2012! Perhaps this is the message given in
this new formation. Solar Storms are swarms of electrically
charged subatomic particles from the Sun, which buffet the Earth
causing problems for orbiting satellites, which have delicate
electronics. On the ground we witness them as the Northern and
Southern Lights. However a few times throughout history the Sun
ejects enormous swarms, which can cause serious damage to our
electrical power structure causing catastrophic harm to our
modern-day global structures. Perhaps we need to not only keep
an eye on the ground, but also to the heavens.

(April 21) - A massive solar storm could be catastrophic for
the United States and other countries, scientists warn.

Such a storm could knock out power nationwide,
ABCNews.com reported, leading to a nightmarish
scenario that could include failures of transportation,
communication and financial systems; shutdowns of government
services; and a lack of safe drinking water, food and
medication.
Solar storms form when intense bursts of plasma erupt from
the surface of the sun, creating what's called a coronal
mass ejection (CME). These eruptions can produce
electromagnetic interference that wreaks havoc with
electricity-dependent technology on Earth.
Although the probability of a worst-case scenario solar
storm event is low, researchers say that our increasing
reliance on technology makes it crucial to be prepared for
such a calamity.

"The consequences could be extreme," Roberta Balstad, a
research scientist with Columbia University's Center for
Research on Environmental Decisions, told ABCNews.com.
In 1859, a powerful solar storm fried telegraph systems
around the world. Another one caused a blackout in Quebec,
Canada, 20 years ago.
Michael Kaiser, project scientist for NASA's Solar
TErrestrial RElations Observatory (STEREO) mission, told
ABCNews.com that even if a big solar storm were to hit the
nation, power grid operators could minimize the damage if
they had enough of a warning.
Kaiser said he and his colleagues are working to refine
their ability to better predict solar storms before they
happen. "We're getting smarter now," he added.
