The federal immigration officer was shot in the leg as he and other officers made initial contact at about 3 p.m. with Duran, a wanted parolee, Roseville police Lt. Cal Walstad said.

Three officers, all veterans of the Roseville Police Department, were then injured during a later exchange of gunfire, after Duran fled. One was hit by bullet fragments, one was shot in the jaw and the other shot in the shoulder.

One of the officers -- it's not clear which -- is listed in serious condition.

Another officer, and the ICE agent, were listed as stable and alert at Sutter Roseville Medical Center.

The officer injured by bullet fragments was released from the hospital late Friday evening.

Police were able to pin Duran inside a home in a neighborhood at Sixth Street and Hampton Drive, where a standoff ensued until he surrendered.

Several schools in the area were locked down during the standoff.

People who live near the site of the standoff were invited to stay at a nearby community center. They were told by authorities Saturday morning they could return home.

One at-home day care kept its kids inside into the nighttime hours, despite the fact that some of the children had been there since 6:30 a.m.

Law enforcement officers had been looking for Duran in the area for at least 10 days before finding him on Friday afternoon, Roseville police spokesman Cal Walstad said. When they found him, Walstad added, he opened fire, wounding the federal immigration officer, who was on the scene to provide support for the Roseville police.

Duran has been tied to gang activity in the past, Wastad said.

Deborah Hoffman, a spokeswoman for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, confirmed that Duran is a parolee and that she has been asked not to provide any more information about why he had been imprisoned or when he was released.

Celia Duran, the suspect's mother, told KCRA 3 she believes her son did what he did Friday because he is addicted to methamphetamine and did not want to return to prison.

The Roseville police chief and city manager went to the hospital Friday night to speak with the injured officers.

The victims were all in relatively good spirits, all things considered, Roseville Police Chief Daniel Hahn said.

It was the biggest police operation of its kind in the region in recent history, Hahn added.
