KAWKAWLIN — The Michigan State Police confirmed today that Thursday night’s pedestrian accident on M-13 resulted in one fatality.

The state police confirmed the death of 53-year-old Randall Pierson of Pinconning. According to a news release, Pierson was walking in the roadway when he was struck by a northbound 2004 GMC Envoy sport-utility vehicle driven by an unidentified 21-year-old female. A witness to the aftermath of the crash confirmed an attempt by rescuers to perform CPR on Pierson at the scene before he was taken by ambulance to McLaren-Bay Region Medical Center. He was later pronounced dead.

The crash occurred in the vicinity of Wetters Road and the State Police first responded to it at about 6:55 p.m. The MSP were assisted at the accident scene by the Bay County Sheriff’s Department, Kawkawlin Township Fire and Rescue, MMR Ambulance and the Michigan Department of Transportation. The State Police are handing the crash’s investigation. Police said weather conditions are not believed to be a contributing factor.

The accident resulted in a closure in both directions of the stretch of M-13 between Wetters Road and Parish Road while emergency services tended to the victim and the police began their investigation. The closure lasted around an hour and a half.
