WISE, VA (WWBT) - The lock down at the University of Virginia's College at Wise is now lifted and has been called a hoax.

The university website was temporarily down, possibly from high traffic. It now loads with the following information:

•  9:28pm - The college is currently in a lockdown due to an alleged gunman on campus. Find a safe place and stay put! Lock all doors until further notice!

•  10:08pm - Lock down continues. Alleged gunman on campus. Stay put, lock all doors until further instructions.

•  10:57pm - Lock down lifted. All Clear.

The website was back online around 11:30 p.m.

Wise County Commonwealth's Attorney tweeted:" Lockdown over. It was a hoax. Everyone safe."

According to Virginia State Police, a student called 911 around 9 p.m. Wednesday to report a gunman on campus. When interviewed by special agents with the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation's Wytheville Field Office, the student confessed that it was a hoax.

Police are investigating the incident. No charges have been announced at this time.
