Fourth rabies case reported in Cumberland County

Cumberland County animal control officials say they are treating a dead fox found on Fort Bragg as a case of rabies after test results on the animal came back as "unsatisfactory."

FORT BRAGG, N.C. — Cumberland County animal control officials say they are treating a dead fox found on Fort Bragg as a case of rabies after test results on the animal came back as "unsatisfactory."

The animal was found on Ardennes Road, and Animal Control Director Dr. John Lauby, in a news release, advised residents in the area to be on alert for sick or abnormal-acting animals and wildlife.

The case marks the fourth rabies case in Cumberland County this year.

Lauby also advised pet owners to be sure their pets are up to date on their rabies vaccinations, and if not, take them to a local veterinary for a booster shot immediately.

Anyone coming into contact with an animal suspected of having rabies or anyone who has been bitten or scratched by an animal should call Cumberland County Animal Control at 910-321-6852 between 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and call the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office, at 910-323-1500, any other time.
