This event is pretty wide spread. Here is the South America map. [link to earthquake.usgs.gov]

"God forbid we should ever be 20 years without such a rebellion. The people cannot be all, & always, well informed... If they remain quiet under such misconceptions it is a lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty... Let them take arms... What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots & tyrants. " - Thomas Jefferson in 1787

Believe or not CNN just called this quake an 'after shock' of the one in Chile.

I don't like this one bit... too many big quakes in too short a period of time...

but it happened hundreds of miles away from the 8.8!!!!

that's like having a 8.8 in L.A.

and calling a 6'er in San Fran an aftershock...

can this happen? do we have any geologists reading this that want to comment on this?

My thoughts also, but hey, it was said on CNN...
How the hell can we really get reliable information about anything any more there is just so much noise a decent informational signal is nearly completely lost in the noise.

Re: Magnitude 6.3 quake hits Argentina, centered near Salta - U.S. Geological Survey
It is an after shock. It's not that far from the epicenter of the original quake. You will see these for quite some time since the big quake was so large. The seismologists have been warning people for a long time that the Pacific crust has been under tremendous stress and that very large eq's are imminent. There was a large 7.2 quake in Japan yesterday but no one paid attention because it was on an island that is not populated. Also the quakes that have been taking place for about the past year are very shallow and will cause much more damage that one that is deep. Yes, the earth is going under some changes and unfortunately this generation will experience catastrophes never seen before.
