Re: Something Happened in Washington DC Today
For some reason I'm reminded of the book "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy"..and the part where there was no currency..so they deemed it to be leaves..and then everyone was walked around with as many leaves as they could carry..all stuffed up their jackets, pockets , etc..and they figured out that didn't work very well and were still pondering what to do..

ANYWAYS..I vote for CHOCOLATE to be the new currency! Yeah baby! Only downfall is most women would be dirt poor..haha!

***** Economists: Another Financial Crisis on the Way

Nonpartisan Group Led by Nobel Winner Calls for Stronger Financial Reforms

By MATTHEW JAFFE
March 2, 2010

Even as many Americans still struggle to recover from the country's worst economic downturn since the Great Depression, another crisis – one that will be even worse than the current one – is looming, according to a new report from a group of leading economists, financiers, and former federal regulators.

In the report, the panel, that includes Rob Johnson of the United Nations Commission of Experts on Finance and bailout watchdog Elizabeth Warren, warns that financial regulatory reform measures proposed by the Obama administration and Congress must be beefed up to prevent banks from continuing to engage in high risk investing that precipitated the near collapse of the U.S. economy in 2008.

The report warns that the country is now immersed in a "doomsday cycle" wherein banks use borrowed money to take massive risks in an attempt to pay big dividends to shareholders and big bonuses to management – and when the risks go wrong, the banks receive taxpayer bailouts from the government.

"Risk-taking at banks," the report cautions, "will soon be larger than ever."

not too hard to find our daily doom these days.....

Re: Something Happened in Washington DC Today
it's a fact. However, in GLP land anything that starts with I heard or my lobbyist told me is dismissed out of hand.

DC RUNS on buzz...it's like twitter on steroids.

Actually, its twitter and GLP's bastard stepchild. If someone is sniffed out to be a BS'er, they are done in DC. As you earn your credibility chops, your sources improve and you move up the ladder.

I've been in the game for 20+ years. Surprisingly GLP is a good source of RAW data...sometimes posters have real tidbits, sometimes the stories just happen to be more correct than not...vox populi for sure, and it's very amazing to me how the "locals" sniff out bullshit.

I've learned more than a few things here...heard it here first as they say.

It's time for me to return the favor.

So you work in DC?
Or Wall street?

They going to keep the dollar proped up?

I commute between DC and a major and very corrupt midwest city.

The euro, pound and US dollar are all done, and all going down NOW.

Guess what major currency is left? Hint: not the yen.

The CANADIAN DOLLAR would be my best guess.

I hope this is not the big news for DC middle of the week.

Gay Marriage Finally Becomes Legal in Washington D.C.
[link to newsblaze.com]
Gay marriage is now legal in Washington D.C.

They now join Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont as the sixth place to allow same-sex unions.

However, the opposition is no doubt taking place. Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington on Tuesday cut employee health care benefits to get around having to cover gay couples. They also cut their foster care earlier in protest of the legislation.

The economy will get a boost as a result of the legislation. According to the NY Times, "A study by the Williams Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles, predicted that more than 14,000 same-sex marriages would occur in the city over the next three years, which would bring in $5 million in new tax revenue and create 700 jobs."

Of course, you'll get some bigoted GOP cretins coming in and trying to refute that logic. Bible thumpers and bigots beware, equal rights are coming to lower your hateful voices.

Oh, and for those of you that run these Catholic companies trying to reduce benefits for gay couples to dissuade them from marrying, I have a piece of news: THEY DON'T CARE. They've been fighting for this right for years - you think they're going to shed a tear for you homophobic losers and your further oppression? Get real.

Now, some of you may complain because I wrote a story about protesting civil rights being pointless. Well, we have every law in place to end segregation; you can't end racism. You can, however, end the ban of gay marriage. That protesting has actually come to fruition. So, there you go.

I have renewed hope for this nation yet.

Idaho Republicans push anti-Washington D.C. bills
[link to www.businessweek.com]
Idaho Republicans lobbed more legislative spitballs at Washington, D.C., with measures calling to sue the federal government over gun rights and control of federal land and to replace standard American currency with gold and silver.

The bills join several other anti-federal government measures introduced in the Legislature, including a measure to preempt federal identification legislation that could affect state driver's licenses and a resolution demanding leaders in Washington, D.C. eliminate the country's deficit in 55 years.

And last month, the House rejected any federal health care law that would require people to buy insurance.

St. Maries Republican Dick Harwood told the House State Affairs Committee on Tuesday that Idaho should approve a bill making guns manufactured and sold in-state exempt from national regulations -- including background checks on people who buy the guns. Similar bills have cleared the Montana and Tennessee legislatures, and Harwood says passing one would show that Idaho is willing to stand up for its rights, too.

"If you don't challenge what the federal government is doing, then business goes on as usual," Harwood said, citing historical examples of Americans taking on the status quo. "They made a ruling years ago that a slave was not a human being. And that was changed because somebody challenged it."

Lawmakers voted to delay action on his bill for now. The state attorney general says the measure could be unconstitutional if it regulates guns in ways that contradict federal law.

Idaho lawmakers aren't alone in directing their ire at the feds. Lawmakers dozens of states are warning Congress not to trample states' rights with resolutions on issues ranging from gun control and health care.

But Idaho, one of the most-conservative states in the country, is particularly fertile ground for fed bashing. In an election year, merely introducing the bills can placate conservative constituents back home.

Minority Democrats often express frustration with such measures. Suing the federal government would be costly and unnecessary, Rep. Elfreda Higgins, D-Garden City, told Harwood.

"Would you really rather spend taxpayer money on litigation instead of on schools and jobs for the people who live in Idaho?" Higgins said.

Rep. Eric Anderson, R-Priest Lake, wants Idaho to consider legal action against leaders in Washington, D.C. The Bureau of Land Management and the Forest Service manage about 61 percent of Idaho territory, and Anderson wants a state council to determine if Idaho can sue the federal government.

"If the federal government is negligent, there may be a possibility we could take over the operations of the land," Anderson said.

With her measure to allow the use of gold and silver in addition to dollars issued by the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank, Challis Republican Rep. Lenore Barrett says she wants Idahoans to take control of their currency.

Similar bills have been introduced during previous legislative sessions in Idaho, where the state Republican Party platform recognizes "the failure of the Federal Reserve System to maintain a sound U.S. dollar and the dangers of private bankers controlling the issuance of our currency."

Barrett told the House Ways and Means Committee on Tuesday -- its Republican majority voted to introduce the bill -- that she wasn't quite sure how her bill would work.

But she promised people at a full hearing could explain how to restore a "constitutionally valid tender."

"You won't be going around with big gold bars in your pockets," she said. "If this ever gets a hearing, it's going to be exciting."
