Obama criticized NAFTA during the 2008 presidential election campaign but has not followed through on threats to withdraw from the agreement if Canada and Mexico did not agree to revamp the pact's labor and environmental provisions. But many Democrats are pushing for that and other changes to existing trade deals before considering any new deals such as the deals with South Korea, Colombia and Panama. The House of Representatives is expected to vote later this year on whether the United States should remain a member of the World Trade Organization. U.S. law allows House and Senate members to request a vote on that issue every five years. In 2005, 86 of the House's 435 members voted to withdraw from the world trade body. |

RUREADY? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 894912The bill spearheaded by Rep. Gene Taylor, a Mississippi Democrat, would require President Barack Obama to give Mexico and Canada six months notice that the United States will no longer be part of 16-year-old trade pact. Taylor blames NAFTA for a loss of U.S. manufacturing jobs that he believes threatens national security, a spokesman for the conservative 10-term congressman said. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 894912Didn't they try to shaft NAFTA years ago? They were not scared back then of being thrown out. They have to give you a bone and I guess Nafta is what they think will save their necks. THINK AGAIN. To LITTLE, to LATE. Bush started it and Clinton finished it. That tells me all I need to know, the Repubs and Dems are in this together and you are the spoils of the war they fight together. YOU HAVE BEEN BOILED. |

Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 894912 Canada 03/04/2010 06:14 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I'm sure that would make many Canadians very happy. The only winners in that deal was big business and the politicians that stuffed their pockets. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 791458Well, if they cancelled NAFTA and phased it out over afew years, I can see a painful transition back to a healthy manufacturing base. It will likely bring another recession, riots, and social chaos where manufacturing has been for the past 2 decades. Overall I think this is just lip service. |

I will tell you that I have been across Canada in the past 2 years and I have seen the devastation that losing our manufacturing base has brought. I now live Detroit Michigan and abot 80% of the auto manufacturing has disappeared in the last 10 years. That's not including the textiles, electronics, and all the rest of hte things we take for granted that we have lost in the past 50 years. It is time for renaissance of manufacturing ni America !! |

Even if they present a bill we all know it has no chance...its a great idea but honestly when was the last time a great idea was passed in congress? |

Same fracking defeatist attitude that keep getting the likes of the Bush's, Clinton's and now Obama's and a zillion Congress people re-elected. Don't push it because "we all know it has no chance" is just like don't vote for Ross Perot because he has no chance or don't vote for Ron Paul because has no chance. This mindest and its multi-sourced megaphones has to be silenced. It is time for renaissance of manufacturing in America !! And it is time to Repeal NAFTA. |

If one watches the Special Order Speeches, one soon discovers there are in fact many many US House Representative that think like you, except they get no expousre to the People and hence no support from the rest of the people. |
