This thought of global power grid failure is really scary when you live the scenario in your mind.

If that happened, your power goes out, you think it's just a power outage, a local event. Then you go to make some phone calls. No service. There would literally be no way to communicate to anyone else without driving to them in person. You couldn't get gas, food, nothing. Really imagining that in my mind. Fucking scary.

You wont be able to drive if you have a newer car that relies on a computer to control the engine.

Define "newer car." My husband has the new car for commuting to work, and for some damn reason I have never been able to figure out, I've held onto my toyota Rav4 since 1999. I refuse to part with it. People think I'm earthy crunchy and a bit nuts to be so adamant about it. Define "newer" please. Is a thirteen year old car "newer?"
 Quoting: vienrose

yes, it relies on a computer to run the engine. any fuel inject gas engine relies on a computer, that includes most cars back in the 80's. there is also the problem of electronic ignition which goes back into the 70's.

easy way to tell, if it has a catalytic converter it most likely will not run after an emp. gearheads will know what changes to make to everything up to an 198X [there were some diesel trucks built in the late 80's also]. make sure it uses a carburetor and points, or keep an extra module for an early electronic ignition [hei, duraspark and whatever it was dodge used] in some kind of protective enclosure to replace the one that will be burned up.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1549625

also, if you live in the city [poulation over 50,000] i would actually recommend a dirt bike. an off road motorcycle [aka. dirt bike] is more likely to be useful when tshf. the roads and freeways will be blocked by accidents and vehicles that no longer run. get a dirt bike and learn how to ride it [over stairs and other obstacles].

If you have an engine like I do in my 94 Sierra that has a mechanical distributor, it is p[possible to convert it to run with a points/condenser/coil ignition by simply replacing the distributor with one out of a six cylinder engine that predates electronic ignition. Then all you have to do is replace the throttle body injector with a carburetor , stuff any half way decent mechanic can do.If you've got a car or truck that has no distributor driving off the camshaft, you're screwed basically

We're talking cars made before the IC chips were used for everything. If it has a carb instead of fuel injection, and a distributor and coil you should be okay. Alternator might be blown but this could be fixed. Probably about 1978-older depending on models.

I work for a NASA contractor and handle the video conferencing sessions between JSC and other facilities. Everybody always wants to see a link. Well, everything talked about in these vc's is top secret - so there's obviously not a link. I love my family and need my job so I'm not gonna tell you much that would endanger those either. I work for Boeing. All I can tell you is there is a LOT of interesting shit happening. The moon is NOT crashing - but it doesn't need to. There is a reason so many are sending birds up to watch the Sun - and it's not cause we just would like to know more about the Sun.

We'll start here and I'll respond how and when I can.

like i said, a gear head would know what to do. i did'nt include anything after the 80's as a possibility, because the vehicles you can fix are so few and far between. even out of the few built after the 80's that you can fix it's a specific model or specific engine.

here's an idea, how about you post the data here in another thread, but just don't say you work for NASA?

any good NASA employee should easily be able to find half a dozen conspiracy sites where articles are posted which actually are unknowingly accurate. just pick a few and post those.

OP,

I asked about this already some pages ago, but is there any info you could shed on the timeline?

- When was it first observed that "something's not right"?

- Have the events developed from there in a linear fashion, or more exponentially? Do you expect things to continue to develop at the same speed?

- If you would have to throw in your best guess, when will be the worst moments, when we really need to learn to live without certain things? Withing months, years, or decades?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 176293

I can reply to your second question. When what is happening progresses, and depending on things which can be involved - but we have no way to know for sure - this can escalate really quickly. We, and I mean everyong, won't have much notice. Not knowing which telecoms will be affected first - it's hard to know how whatever notice we get will be delivered. Personally, I have decided that when I hear - through any verifiable source(s) - that a major metro area is experiencing 'problems' with their power - that's my personal que. Like I said previously - the power grid in US is automatic and can cascade offline quickly. I don't know how else to put it. The real science behind this dictates that there won't be much time for anyone who might wish to - to give a notice. I personally do not believe there will be any official notice of an incoming CME. What I wish would happen would be for others who could - to agree in public that this is about to be a problem.

I myself am wondering if there is a "birth" about to happen. In all the cycles of all life there is birth and death. A new planet being born!? Sounds funny i know, but look around at all aspects of life and its the same system. As above so below!
