The US Postal Service is a privately owned Business. Dumbass. When did u fail school? oh that's right you believe everything your govt tells you. ooops! Just becuase you work for the Postal service and they get off the same holidays as the govt employees, doesn't meant they are truly govt.

Read the Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1988. That should open your eyes.

your kind of a ass-hole are't you. a little harsh, i think a lot of people thought it was ran by the gov.
 Quoting: anonymous coward 905372

People think they know many things, and the asshole was just pointing out to you head up your asses type folks that you don't.

The USPS does still have some people who fall under civil service, but after round 1982? or so, they are no longer civil service.

There are several unions involved in the USPS, and all contracts are due to be re-negotiated this year, some of the gloom and doom you are hearing is no doubt coming from the very well paid private board, which manages the USPS.

Congress critters are still involved, and have to approve rates, closures, etc. as has been mentioned, and also confirm the "private" post master general.

Although there are many problems in the USPS, mostly lazy union scrubs, there are many very hard working individuals also. Same as everywhere else.

Rate wise it is still the best deal, UPS, and FEDEX aren't even doing that well right now. If you get rid of it, a walmart types come in, and the chinese will be processing our mail, and the big white boys will just be pocketing the profit, probably what is behind all this talk anyway.

I don't like unions, but do remember why they exist, to bad they have failed to remember themselves.

Re: US Postal Service Mulling 3 Day Delivery
A couple of years ago about three weeks before Christmas, I noticed we had not gotten any mail for four days. It stood out to me because I was expecting an important piece of mail. I happened to be coming home as the mail truck arrived on day four, so I waited in the driveway. The mail carrier was only two doors down. Anyway, he speeds on by the house and I note that he is not our regular carrier.

Anyway, I called the post office a bit later and mentioned we had not gotten mail in several days and how unusual that was. In my mind I was thinking even junk mail would have shown up by then. But I only mentioned the mail we were expecting.

The lady on the phone says "Maam, you sometimes you have to order catalogs, they are not automatic."

WTF? Who said anything...anyway I told her it was business mail.

So then she says our carrier just walked in. She asked him about it, and he told her to tell me that we just don't get much mail.

That next monday, we got so much mail our regular carrier could barely stuff it in the box. My piece of mail that I had been expecting was there.
 Quoting: _Storm_

Bulk mail doesn't get 1st class treatment. If anything goes wrong with the address or Any other reason, it hits the trash can. 1st class mail is treated differently, and better. HOWEVER, if some idiot guaranteed delivery of a catalog or such (because of an approaching sale) then it HAS to be delivered before that date or they catch hell(meaning 1st class mail might be late). Most bulk mail is processed by machines and not clerks.
First class mail is forwarded automatically or returned if necessary-- all for the price of the stamp.
Postal clerk can't tell supervisors how to do things. Supervisors have the right to be wrong.

I have no problem with my mail being delivered 3 days per week - it makes sense to me.

The Postal Workers Union will fight it tooth and nail...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 666132

I'm thinking it will be the Carrier's Union that will do the hard fighting.

The Postal Workers Union is the Clerks' Union. Of course this will affect them also, but the Carriers are much militant. All I can say is thankfully I retired in '98.

Well there goes Netflix and Blockbuster OnLine. They depend on the mail being delivered everyday except Sunday to get movies to the customers.

I would to see them stop mail service all together and let people watch the movies either on the computer or TV. Netflix has a box that lets users do this but not all the movies are available.

It is more about feds snooping & total control of the mail, and feds coming by the house every day.

Once a week is plenty for most. And NO junk mail or advertising. Cutting junk mail would reduce the work load dramatically.

If we want to buy something we can look for it without being solicited.
 Quoting: The Milkman 309689

Exactly, the garbage can next to the mailboxes at my apartment complex is FULL and overflowing with junk mail. People don't even bother taking it into their home, they just toss it out right there. I do too, and after getting rid of the junk mail, the stack I pulled from my box is reduced by 3/4.

As long as the US Postal Service answers to Congress it is not privately owned and it never has been. Privatization was held over our heads many years, so far it hasn't happened even as they contract out more and more. In 1992 the Postal Service was in the black, and had been for years, making profits that Congress used to keep bailing out Social Security. Also in 1992 we were told that the USPS as we knew it then would not be the same in 2000. What an understatement!

It is all about CONTROL. They want everyone off paper and cash - once that is done, they will have us by the short hairs.

Tell the average American how much money the government will save by reducing mail to 3 times per week and they will demand it, never stopping to think about the repercussions. It is similar to the TV switch from analog to digital - CONTROL.

Hey Phen I read that Anti_drug Abuse Act of 1988 and it shocked me when I read that the postal employees themselves could be hired as marshals, They could serve you with legal papers if the need were ever to arise. Oh yeah. It just blew my mind.I guess you could say if that is the correct term. My oldest brother-in-law works for the Postal service has been for damn near 35 yrs. he says he can pretty much do what he wants there in the office where he works they don't bother him. His wife, my oldest sister won't let him retire tho. She wants those benefits. lol!

My mail can arrive as early as noon & it has arrived as late as 5 pm.

"Let me get this straight......we're trying to pass a health care plan written by a committee whose chairman says
he doesn't understand it, passed by a Congress that hasn't read it but exempts themselves from it, to be signed by a
president that also hasn't read it and who smokes, with funding administered by a treasury chief who didn't pay
his taxes, all to be overseen by a surgeon general who is obese, and financed by a country that's broke.

What the hell could possibly go wrong?

If the Postal Service disappeared from the face of the earth and was replaced by the free market, the service would be better at a lower cost. Most postal workers are parasites who should be forced to compete with the rest of the world.

It is not a PRIVATELY owned business. It is owned by the U.S. government, but acts independently and does not receive any taxpayer revenue. But it is not privately owned.

The USPS is often mistaken for a government-owned corporation (e.g., Amtrak), but as noted above is legally defined as an "independent establishment of the executive branch of the Government of the United States," (39 U.S.C. § 201) as it is wholly owned by the government and controlled by the Presidential appointees and the Postmaster General. As a quasi-governmental agency, it has many special privileges, including sovereign immunity, eminent domain powers, powers to negotiate postal treaties with foreign nations, and an exclusive legal right to deliver first-class and third-class mail. Indeed, in 2004, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in a unanimous decision that the USPS was not a government-owned corporation, and therefore could not be sued under the Sherman Antitrust Act.[21] The U.S. Supreme Court has also upheld the USPS's statutory monopoly on access to letterboxes against a First Amendment freedom of speech challenge; it thus remains illegal in the U.S. for anyone other than the employees and agents of the USPS to deliver mailpieces to letterboxes marked "U.S. Mail."[22]

I have many family in the post office.

I don't understand the talk about it being part of the government. Even though my family are in a union, they are considered federal government employees. (read the sign when you walk into the PO about what happens when you rob the clerk) anyway, the PO is operated like a business, but it is part of the government. At least, it is your money going to fill in the red gap when it fails.

There are a few people that work prety slow there. And the supervisors, well, let's just say most glp ac's could be supervisors, and no that isn't a compliment.

Personally, I would rather see the postal service ran as private business like by UPS or something. Back when this country was founded, Mail was the only communication. There weren't telephones, internet, you probably couldn't even send out a morse code back then. The government wanted to make sure you could communicate.

Perhaps Postal service has seen it's day.

I see the issue now. The postal service is much like a private businsess that is mandated by the government not to make a profit and it doesn't pay taxes. It's in a grey area between government and private.

...Privatize first class mail delivery. Get some competition out there to deliver the mail and a new system that works will be created.
 Quoting: AncientCoins

Exactly. Nature abhors a vacuum. If the USPS can't handle it, then someone will step up to fill the void.

The problem is that it'd have to be allowed by statute; some Congresscritter sweating reelection would probably have to introduce a bill or somesuch.

Another problem would be how such a "private" mail service would be funded. Subscriptions? Advertisements [via the junk mail we all dread -- guaranteed delivery in exchange for revenue]? By the mailpiece, a la UPS/FedEx/DHL, etc.?

Not everyone has/will sign on to Internet-based mail and bill payment. I for one still pay bills the old-fashioned way, paper statement and check-in-the-mail. This gives me control of the situation -- *I* decide when to send a payment.
