U.S. Sitting on Mother Lode of Rare Tech-Crucial Minerals
U.S. Sitting on Mother Lode of Rare Tech-Crucial Minerals

China supplies most of the rare earth minerals found in technologies such as hybrid cars, wind turbines, computer hard drives and cell phones, but the U.S. has its own largely untapped reserves that could safeguard future tech innovation.

Those reserves include deposits of both "light" and "heavy" rare earths - families of minerals that help make everything from TV displays to magnets in hybrid electric motors. A company called U.S. Rare Earths holds the only known U.S. deposit of heavy rare earths with a concentration worth mining, according to a recent report by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

Light rare earths include the minerals ranging from lanthanum to gadolinium on the periodic table of elements, while heavy rare earths range from terbium to lutetium.

Averting disaster

If developed, such deposits could help the U.S. avoid a possibly crippling rare earth shortage in the next decade. China has warned that its own industrial demands could compel it to stop exporting rare earths within the next five or 10 years.

"There is already a shortage, because there are companies that already can't get enough material," said Jim Hedrick, a former USGS rare earth specialist who recently retired. "No one's trying to expand their use of rare earths because they know there's not more available."

U.S. Rare Earths practically stumbled upon its first rare earth deposit at Lehmi Pass, on the border between Idaho and Montana, about 15 years ago. The company founders coveted the area's reserves of thorium - an alternative nuclear fuel - and took little interest in the rare earths that were only used, at the time, in lighter flints and tracer bullets for the military.

Their view changed over the years as rare earths became practically irreplaceable in high-tech products used by millions of people today. The company only recently changed its name to U.S. Rare Earths after staking out another deposit at Diamond Creek, Idaho.

"The fact is, the Diamond Creek property is today, the most accessible, undeveloped rare earth resource with significant [heavy rare earths] that there is in North America," said Jack Lifton, an independent consultant who works with U.S. Rare Earths.

Recent USGS figures estimate that the U.S. holds rare earth ore reserves of up to 13 million metric tons. By contrast, the entire world produced just 124,000 metric tons in 2009 - but it would take both time and money for the U.S. to become self-sufficient in producing rare earths.

One important thing to note is some of these rare materials are used in nuclear devices.

Developing it is not going to happen.

Just like developing all those discovered deposits of oil in the USA is not happening.

Back in the late 1960's early 70's just before the 'energy crises' the US policy changed from using domestic resources to depleting the world FIRST of its resources.

The idea is a military strategy, If we can use up all of theirs, then when the world is depleted we can start using our own thus maintaining military (and economy) superiority.

Peak Oil in the US in the 70's was man-made in that it was planned and caused by politics and military planning. It was a sham to make the world think that the USA had to use other nations supplies of oil.

We closed oil wells, we 'hid' documentation on known discovered but never exploited deposits of oil. Then the EPA and the 'green people' (hippies mostly) were brought in to protest hard and long about any potential opening of new oil reserves.

Back during the 70's oil crises folk talked about the oil wells that were being sealed up full of oil, we also talked about the dumping of gasoline and other already refined products in the dessert just to create the false sense that we are out of oil.

If GLP existed back then, most of the pages would have been full of eyewitness accounts and if camera tech that we have today existed then GLP would be linking to servers with lots of pictures of the activity.

About 15 years ago in the Central Valley California (southern end of the valley) oil started all but gushing to the surface. Folk from all over drove by and reported a virtual lake of oil.

the 'authorities' said it was nothing, just a "small" pocket that broke through the floor of the valley. Yet folk who worked for the drilling companies who went to 'fix' the problem reported they drilled and capped, drilled and capped and even bled off some oil sending it overseas.

So when it comes to mineral wealth, you can be certain that this 'new' discovery is an old one and you can be certain that "Ecologists" will be suddenly all up in it screaming that there is now way that extraction can take place because of some new species that it threatens.

OF course there is also the prospect of 'mining the US landfills" for regathering the imported RareEarth materials that have come into the USA from all over the world only to wind up in the US landfills.

Also, more reason for the US to keep its robotic and manned space mission, including landings on asteriods as well as moons it to eventually be robotically mining these resources. Long term vision requires solid and consistent funding as well as consistent political will.
